Seems a bit odd to place a marr. in london 1875 when at least one kids is 12y in 1881. (& none b anywhere near London)

Hi

Free BMD shows a marriage for a John Henry CANNELL and a Mary Ann TILLBROOK in Ipswich, Suffolk,  June Qrt 1869, 4a 835.  Given that the eldest child on the 1881 Census is aged 12, then they should have married about 1868/1869.

Cheers

Welcome to Rootschat Tel

There appear to be 2 John Cannells born in Norwich within a year or so of each other. One later marries Elizabeth and is a shoe finisher.  So we need to be extra careful in looking for the right John with his parents!

Am currently checking the censuses.

Going on above baptism this would be parents marriage

  James Cannell
Clara Ward       both on same page 1846 Q1  vol 13 page 423

The cert can be ordered as that would give their fathers
  as For John Henry's marriage
the birth cert of one of the children will confirm Mary Ann's maiden name

  All   Ipswich births

I can see that John Henry with his parents in 1851 and 1861. He is not with his parents in 1871 but I can't find him with his wife and daughter either.

I think that although the surname seems unusual there is a good possibility of following the wrong line by just using the census and BMD indexes.

I would recommend buying the birth certificate for one of the children to confirm the mother's maiden name. Then buy the marriage certificate to confirm the name of John Henry's father.

Re John Henry Cannell . I have a theory that in the 1870s he was working as a stone mason ,possibly on the restoration of St Pancras Old Church . where he met & married a local girl .[  Mary Ann is down as born poplar Middex 1852 ].
He then moved with his work to Ipswich .where family tradition has it that he worked on the new main Post office construction .
