Castlebank St, Partick, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 04 January 09 20:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,

Perhaps you will be able to help me.  My husband grew up in Partick at 208 Castlebank Street.  Would anyone have photos that they would share from 1955 or prior.  Any photos that were in the family have disappeared and he would love to be able to find some.  Thanks

Have a look at the Virtual Mitchell site

http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php

You can search by street and there are 5 pictures of Castlebank Street, including one from 1955. My grandmother and her sister were born there in 1900 and 1902.

Enjoy the site. You might like The Glasgow Story, too

I was born in 118 Castlebank Street, Partick in September 1945.

If I google Earth it today, I can see the only recognisable part remaining, which is the railway bridge under which we played kick the can at the bottom of Vine Street. Apart from that, the corner where our family lived, Vine and Castlebank Streets, is unrecognisable.

I used to walk past Taggarts haunt, Anderson Street Police Station to go to school across Dumbarton Road to St Peters (Sorry if your husband is a Rangers supporter)  You can also still see St Simons where we all used to tramp up to mass on a Sunday.  The part of Castlebank Street we walked on is now the A883 or something.

I still have vivid memories from then and if you get in touch I have one photo of me and my two sisters in the 'backcourt"

I saw this post and I had to write in!
My great-great grandparents lived in 208 Castlebank St, according to the 1901 census, but they moved before WW1.

I was intrigued by mean_genie's post as I think she may be related to me.

Can you please contact me mean_genie to discuss this further?

Hi ya,

Glad to hear from you.  As your gggrandparents moved before WW1, I doubt that my husband would know of your family.  He was born in 1937 and his parents probably moved to Castlebank Street about 1934.  Just out of curiosity what were the names of your gggrandparents.

Aww, that's a shame. My great-great grandparents were Christopher Hughes and Robina Jenkins Watson.

Thanks anyway,

Hello,

I see that this is a very old post, but worth a try anyway. I'm looking for information about 118 Castlebank Street, Partick, Glasgow. My grandmother was born there in 1912. Was it a residence? A hospital? It is now an empty lot. Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Thank you so much, harrywrag. Very exciting. If my great-grandmother's name isn't listed, would that mean she was a boarder perhaps? Interestingly, my grandmother's birth is listed on 2 registers: the one from Partick as well as one from Dumbarton where my great-grandmother worked as a domestic servant. Both still list the Castlebank address as place of birth.
