INDIA: Routes to Britain
« on: Thursday 08 January 09 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Morning all,
Is there anybody out there that would know which port or ports in Britain that people come into if they are coming from the East Indies or India? was there a most popular one? I am trying to trace a distant family member and have hit a brick wall. We have lots of info on him when he is here (Wifes name first name only, children etc so don't need these) , but nothing before this. He was born in the East Indies/India aprox 1786 according to the 1851 Census.
I have been on the British Library website but cannot find a birth for him there. I am starting to tear my hair out trying to get info on this man before he came to Britain.

Anybody help?
Cheers Michael

P.s Sorry, his name is John Newell

Hi Michael,

apart from the British Library site, we have collected some more India links here:

have you tried all them as well ??

Good luck,
Bob

Thanks for that Bob,
I have seen a few of these sites but not all of them, hopefully I will find something on there. I think I'll settle down now for another days searching. This one man is driving crazy, did'nt think it would be so hard to find someone.

Thanks again
Michael
