Hello 'GerryFarrell'

I have just literally stumbled on your various posts re Dalbeth Cemetery. I spent last Friday and Saturday in the Mitchell Library pouring over the Burial Record Microfilm for St Peters And Dalbeth with limited success and then visiting the cemetery, only to find that there was no entry through the wall to Old Dalbeth and St Peters Cemetery only open on weekdays. Despair!

Then I found yourself and others on RootsChat.com.

I wonder if you could firstly clarify exactly how many cemeteries are actually there? I noticed The Good Shepherd stands between Old Dalbeth and St Peters and Dalbeth Cemeteries. Are they all listed somewhere?

Also I note that you have managed to transcribe the MI's and photograph the gravestones, and wonder whether you might share some of this information if I were to send you a PM?

Hi frankin,

I have also despaired on several occations when looking through the microfilms of the burial records at The Mitchel as they are very hard to read.
On the subject of the Cemetery your right it is known under several names, The land which it is sited was known as Dalbeth estate and owned by the Hopkirk family until 1851 when it was sold to the Community of The Good Shepard who built Dalbeth Convant. The oldest and small part of the cemetery which is walled off was / is known as Old Dalbeth and the newer and much larger part is known as St Peter's. This causes quite a bit of confusion but they are all within the one area off London road.
Check out my previous link to see a pic -

thankfully its looking better as the work continues.

The cemetery is still owned and run by the Catholic Church and although only stafed Mon - Fri it is open for access all weekend just drive in at the gate where you saw the sign for The Good Shepard and this will take you to a smll car park. If you look to the right when facing the main wall Old dalbeth is behind the wall at present there is no opening or gate in the wall for public access as its still under restoration however being a lanarkshire laddie I jumped the wall to get the photos of the remaining gravestones.
Feel free to message and ask for any stones which remain, Although it is only the Old Dalbeth section I have and not St Peters.

Hi Gerry,

Thank you for your reply, I think I have a better idea now about the cemetery names and locations. I think I will visit again soon to have another closer look.

Your other link with the pictures inside Old Dalbeth are an eyeopener!! What a state it must have been allowed to get into.

I,ve taken the opportunity to send you a PM with a short list of MI's I would like to look at more closely if that it is OK with yourself.

Thank you very much once again.
