Chambers in Anglesey
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 20:46 GMT (UK) »
There seem to have been (according to the censuses of the mid 19th century) , a few Chamberses
living in South-West Anglesey at one time. I know of families of that name in the North-west of Anglesey (Holyhead/Valley area ) , but has the name survived in other parts of the island, or in mainland towns ?

David Chambers born 1739 in Scotland moved to Anglesey in the late 1700's.
His son William Chambers was born in Llanfaelog in 1797 and married there.
We presume David "escaped" from Scotland after the Jacobite rebellion and maybe came with brothers who lived in other parts of Anglesey.
We know there are Chambers in the Holyhead and Rhoscolyn area in the North of the Island as well, not all coming from the Llanfaelog Chambers.

That's interesting. Somebody once told me this, as they were also searching for the Chambers name in Anglesey. My father always had this notion that we were descended from Scots, but it turns out that we were descended from Geordies ! . None of these Chambers's crossed the bridge, then ? .

Hi Huwcyn, the Chambers family farmed at a small place called Tyddyn Leci in Llanfaelog, but moved about 1870 to the Wirral in Cheshire as it was then (our line Samuel Chambers c 1850). It seems they moved pretty much as a family unit to either side of the Mersey. Thomas c 1797 moving to Everton with another son William Chambers. other sons must have stayed on the island, but cannot find reference to Tyddyn Leci after the 1861 census.

Skewy.

Latest information is that it was not Scotland but Cumberland. It was Scottish when they first lived there though, but the border changed.

I wonder if they moved when they realised they were about to become English !

The  story is that two brothers fled during the 1688
revolution which brought William & Mary to the English throne. There is quite a bit of history to the family as I believe they were
involved in the northern revolt against Henry VIII , not surprising in view of the family relationship with the abbey, and also in the Jacobite rebellions.
If you Google holm cultram Abbey you will find links to Chambers, including abbott Chambers and the first Bishop Chambers.
The direct link for us is William Chamber 1273- 1307 of Holme in Holderness.  Also google Wolstie castle as they were the keepers at one time.

It was interesting to read were the Chambers family originated as i am the Great Great Grandson of Humphrey William Chambers born in Lanfeulog in 1821-22. William Chambers farmed at Tyn Y Felin Rhoscolyn at one point also lived in Kingsland Holyhead and kept an Inn called the Beaumaris Castle for a short time in 1848.There were other members of the Chambers Family farming at Rhyd Y Bont Rhoscolyn for a long time.I have done some research into the Chambers family. So if you have any questions please get in touch i might be able to give more detail.
