Hi

I'm looking for any information on William and Rosa AGG - emigrated from UK to Canada abt 1920. Rosa (nee Moisey) was born 1895.   Hoping to make contact with descendants of Rosa and William.

Thanks

Hello Graham,

The BC Vital Events index is online (http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca) and lists a death for Rosa May Agg in New Westminster in 1964.  I don't see a William in the index although there are a few other Agg's, all of the same sort of age.  I can look up Rosa's death registration as this will contain the name of the informant - which was usually the next of kin.  I have some newspaper lookups to do in the next week so I can check to see if there was an obituary in the Vancouver daily newspapers as well.

Most records in Canada are restricted to the 100 year rule under our privacy laws so searching for living relatives is very difficult.  You can also search the Canada 411 site as it lists two or three Agg's still living in BC - http://www.canada411.ca/index.html

There is a passenger list record for Rosa on findmypast but the website is having problems and I can't view it due to "high demand'.  There is also one on ancestry so perhaps someone with a sub can do a lookup.

Rosa Agg, 23, was travelling alone aboard the Metagama which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on 24 Mar 1919. It indicates she was going to Whitby, Ontario.

I found attestation papers for William Decimus Agg, born 20 Nov 1892 at Library and Archives Canada and he states he was single, born in England and he was living in Whitby, Ontario at the time he enlisted. Here's a link to the attestation papers:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-119.02-e.php?image_url=http://data2.archives.ca/cef/well1/203715a.gif&id_nbr=2547

You can order a copy of William's WWI file from Library and Archives Canada. The cost depends on how big it is. You can order it online at their website (https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/copies/secure/005010-5100-e.php) or by mail or fax (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/contact/index-e.html).

It also looks like William wasn't in Canada for very long before he enlisted. There is a passenger list entry for William D. Agg, 21, who was aboard the Virginian which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on 23 Apr 1914. He indicates he was a gardener and was going to Toronto.

Unfortunately Library and Archives Canada only has passenger lists up to 1912 for Saint John online so I can't provide a link. If you would like copies of them, please PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

I see there is a William Decimus Agg who was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on 14 Sep 1990. William may have remarried as the only other Agg I could see in the index for the cemetery was Eulalie Frances Agg who was buried on 9 Jan 1984. There weren't dates of death provided in the index for either.

If there are others who may have been buried at Mountain View Cemetery under a different name that you want to look for, here's a link to their burial index:

I finally got back on findmypast and found a second, interesting passenger list.  Rosa Agg and her four year old son, Gordon, sailed on the Montrose from Liverpool to Montreal on 28 June 1924.  Her address is listed as Sand Lane, Badsey nr Evesham.  The Badsey address ties in with the William Decimus Agg Attestation papers.  This could be a return trip as their "country of last permanent residence" is listed as other British Colony.  I checked the GRO indexes but couldn't find a birth for Gordon - which could be another confirmation that he was born in Canada.

To make it more interesting, there was a Moisey family on the voyage with her.  William, 24 yrs, and his wife Elise, 23yrs, address Bredon View, Badsey, Evesham.  His occupation was listed as farmer. Their last country of residence was recorded as England. Not sure if they are related to you or just a wild coincidence.

I searched the online obituary archives (they only run from 2002 to 2008) and found an obituary for Elena Agg in Vancouver - http://www.rootschat.com/links/059p/ - the wife of Gordon Agg.  There is also a tree on Rootsweb which lists (living) descendents:  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thelistfamily/listtree/tree4/html/fam/fam00014.htm

Hopefully, we can tie this all together with the death registration and obituary but it should keep you occupied until I can get to the library tomorrow or Wednesday!

Hi Lynwen

Wow!  It all seems to fit!!! This is fabulous news, another family line with the Moiseys in Canada!! Thank you so much, it really is exciting.  I've checked my tree and Rosa did indeed have a younger brother, William G Moisey b.1899) , who married Elsie Green.  This has got me thinking, Rosa's other siblings were 2 sisters: Maud b.1897 and Frances b.1901. Maud married a Tom James and Frances to Percy Grinnell  - I wonder if the James' and Grinnells' also travelled with them?

Thank you again for helping me - I really do appreciate it.

Look forward to hearing if you find any obits.

Best wishes
Graham

Hi Graham - excellent, it was a two for one deal!!

I can't see any James' or Grinnells on the same or any other passenger lists but I did find Rosa again - and once again she came up trumps with some very helpful info on the manifest.  She obviously returned to England for a visit because she shows up sailing on the Empress of France from Liverpool to Saint John, New Brunswick on 7 Mar 1956.  She is travelling on her own and her birth date is listed as 26 April 1898, occupation Cook, and her last residence in the UK is Mrs. T. James, Bredon View, Badsey, Evesham, Worcestershire.

We'll see what tomorrow holds!
