Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have discovered one of my relatives was an inmate in a HM prison in Kent in 1911. His name was John Milton Kerr. He was originally a solicitor from Halifax. The census gives his occupation as soliciter, struck off. On the 1901 census John and his brother Robert had their own Solicitors business.
What I would like to find out is why he was in prison. Where could I find this info out?
Hi Sally
I found your post while researching my great grandfather Patrick Callaghan. He was in Maidstone Prison with your ancestor John Milton Kerr!! They are listed on the same sheet in the 1911 Census, and for some reason I thought 'solicitor, struck off' sounded interesting! They must have known each other. My great grandfather, from Kilkenny, was the black sheep of the family and tried to murder his poor wife, Kate, at their home in St Helens, Lancashire. They had 12 children...so they must have liked one another at some point
. Anyhow, forgive me for troubling you, but the whole episode is rather fascinating, and I would love to know more about their sojourn in Maidstone! Best wishes
Elaine
