Criminal Records
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 10:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have discovered one of my relatives was an inmate in a HM prison in Kent in 1911. His name was John Milton Kerr. He was originally a solicitor from Halifax. The census gives his occupation as soliciter, struck off. On the 1901 census John and his brother Robert had their own Solicitors business.
What I would like to find out is why he was in prison. Where could I find this info out?

I would guess that the 'struck off' related to his crime, and a search on http://books.google.com/ pulled up some information:
In "Anomalies of the English Law", it quotes from a newspaper article of Mar 20 1911, listing John Milton Kerr previously of Halifax as among those struck off - he was 'convicted in Leeds in November last of the fraudulent conversion of £1976, and sentenced to three years penal servitude'.

You might be able to find other articles in the newspaper (I can check The Times for you later, but not from this computer).

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/28504/pages/4544 - something else relating to him.

And:

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/28957/pages/8832
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/28355/pages/2483
 - perhaps suggest the reason - he went bankrupt in 1910.

Yes, they are him!! Mmm, does look like he went bankrupt. Robert Moffat Kerr, John Milton Kerrs brother is my Great great grandfather. He died in 1905, and i did wonder if there was foul play!!
Thanks for your help. Its all very interesting.

Hi Sally
I found your post while researching my great grandfather Patrick Callaghan. He was in Maidstone Prison with your ancestor John Milton Kerr!! They are listed on the same sheet in the 1911 Census, and for some reason I thought 'solicitor, struck off' sounded interesting! They must have known each other. My great grandfather, from Kilkenny, was the black sheep of the family and tried to murder his poor wife, Kate, at their home in St Helens, Lancashire. They had 12 children...so they must have liked one another at some point  :). Anyhow, forgive me for troubling you, but the whole episode is rather fascinating, and I would love to know more about their sojourn in Maidstone! Best wishes
Elaine
