"Pardoner on farm"(completed thank you)
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 19:15 GMT (UK) »
Whilst looking for (and finding) one of my families on the 1911 census, I was intrigued to find this occupation description for the son (aged 21). Does anyone know what a "pardoner on farm" was? I know the man in question went on to be a farmer.

The family lived in the Lucton area of Herefordshire and I'm sure he wasn't a seller of pardons (as in Chaucer).

Thanks

Sian

If it's only the transcript you have seen - 1911 doesn't seem to be any better than the rest for accuracy.  'Gardener' perhaps?

No I've looked at the original as well. The first letter is either a D or a P - doesn't look like any G I've seen, but as you say, Gardener does seem more likely.

Seems a strange one that I don't think should be associated with agriculture. Never come across the term, other than the most obvious who in medieval times sold pardos to sinners. :-[
And I don't think this applies in this case. can you upload the occupation so we can have a better look at it?

Wonder if gardener would be correct- as I understand that the householders themselves (I could be wrong on this) filled in the papers and some may not have had high or clear writing skills.

Likewise the enumerator may not have written very clearly either.

I have been a census enumerator twice and believe me one's hand gets tired trying to cram lots of info onto one line in the book.

I have noticed some transcribing 1911 census has shown in spelling mistakes L taken as S , transposed letters etc which is normal human errors.

Found this googling:

Thank you to everyone who has responded. As you can see I've uploaded the image from the 1911 census. Can anyone suggest anything. I think i'm going to go with gardener and curse my ggrandfather's handwriting  ;D
