"Glen Eden" in Caterham in 1911 census
« on: Monday 19 January 09 09:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Like many of us I have been tracking down members of my close family in the 1911 Census, while at the same time trying to sidestep the minefield of mistranscriptions with the transcripts.  However, having discovered my gt-uncle Ronald KERSHAW staying with a family called SHOTTER in Caterham, I was curious to know whether someone with local knowledge could tell me whether the house they occupied, Glen Eden, still exists.  It seems to be on the same page as a "Stansteed" (sic) Rd in the 1901 census which I viewed on Ancestry...
very many thanks, keith

I live near Caterham and I'd say it was Stanstead Road which goes south from Church Rd down towards the M25. Caterham is two villages, one "on the hill" and one "in the valley" and Church Rd connects them.

There was a Glen Eden in Stanstead Road as I found a reference to some documents in the Surrey archives http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/GetRecord/SHCOL_6072   (you will need to scroll down a bit) They seem to be sale particulars from 1950. At the top of the page it tells you how you can get a copy if you think it would be useful to you.

If this is the place you want you might be able to look it up on the land registry site to see if it still exists.

Scrabble,
Thanks very much for that very useful information on the house.
I've often said, and will say it again, that I am always delighted when an old thread twitches into life again, in this case after a pause of nearly three years!
regards, keith

I only noticed the date after I had posted! I usually look at Essex as that is my main area of interest but today I searched for Caterham and Warlingham thinking that I might be able to answer some queries.

This may have been the purchaser http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/39101/pages/6449/page.pdf

I did look at postcode finder on royalmail. No Glen Eden mentioned in the road currently, it could be that the name has been replaced by a number (as is the case with my house) or it could have been bulldozed in order to build a block of flats - that's happening a lot around here too!

Scrabble,
It's never too late to resuscitate a sinking thread...
That 1950 entry is very interesting, thanks so much for taking the time and trouble to look that out for me.
If ever you're looking for info on the Cambs boards, that's where I tend to hang out!
