Hi Gordon

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I think this is their marriage reg~

John McGeorge and Elizabeth Hill are on the same page :

Dec q, 1856, Sunderland, vol 10a page 483

If you get this cert, their fathers' names and occupations will be on it and you can work backwards from there.

Do report back when you have the details and we can look further  :)

It's rather ironic that here I am, in Newcastle, talking to you in Sunderland about your Scottish ancestors  :)

Hi again Makem

Trying to make some progress on this for you.

I notice that on the 1871, John is listed as a mariner RG10/5016 Folio 76 page 67

36 New Grey Street, Sunderland
McGeorge
John, 39, mariner, b. Scotland
Elizabeth, 37, b.Lanchester, Durham
John, 12
George William, 4
James Wallace, 1

Children all b. Sunderland

By 1891, Elizabeth is dead and John is married to a Mary Ellen. He states, b. Dundee. RG12/4137 Folio 64 Page 52

Is this your family?

Where did you get the information that he was:

Quote
a LInen HLW and lived in charles street Dundee and was born in 1831 or 1832

Hi I’m also trying to get information on this John McGeorge. His son George William McGeorge was my great great grandfather. I’ve seen varying birth places for this John, either in Dundee or Edinburgh circa 1831. Did either of you get any further with him? Thanks!

Hi Tom and welcome to Rootschat  :)

I don't think Gordon has been on since he posted so not sure if he found anything further.

Did you find anything from the ScotlandsPeople site? I've not found a birth in either Forfarshire or Midlothian so far. The marriage cert would give his father's name.

I've just looked on the 1881:

This census has John born Liberton, Midlothian. Still down as a Mariner/Seamman

Reference is
1881 - 36 New Gray Street, Sunderland
RG11/5002/69/50

There is an interesting entry in 1841:

Byker Hill, Newcastle/Tyne

Esther MacGeorge,  50
Isabella, 20, dressmaker
Maria, 20
John, 10, coalminer
David, 9, coalminer

All b. Scotland

Did you get this one?

Esther, John and David (from  the 1841) are in Tynemouth in 1851.  John and DAvid are still entered as coalminers and b Scotland,  Galway (presume Galloway).

Not at all sure about this family.
