Thanks again, Barbara and Trish.  I found Kate and Robert with their children on the 1911 census. The extra info about Robert also led me to find him in the previous censuses, with his previous wife Caroline and their impressive string of children.  It seems that in his youth, Robert was a police officer.  Trust my husband to have a PC Pratt among his ancestors! On top of the bunch of Stiffs I found last year!

I am having trouble locating that Kate Lyne Henbest living with her father Francis in Sussex in 1871.  Can't find any Henbests in Sussex that year.  Excuse me while I just get my glass of water and my painkillers!!

Southampton, Hants.  She was 45 in 1911.

Ok will have a look around.

We need to be very careful as there are 2 Kates born about the same time.

Sep 1864   HENBEST  Kate Lyne    Fordingbridge  2b 552

Dec 1865   Henbest  Kate     Southampton  2c 17

I think we need the second one!

Kate L is with her father in 1871 but can't find the other one.
Both seem to be servants in 1881.

More later

Thanks, Barbara.  I agree our Kate is the second one.  Perhaps I'd better check the other census records I've attached to my Kate and make sure I've got the right one.

I wonder if it's been mistranscribed as Herbert or something similar.  When I first saw the name on the birth certificate, I assumed, without really thinking, that it must be Herbert.  I don't know why I thought it couldn't possibly be Henbest!  :-[

I can find no sign of Kate in the 1871 either.  Perhaps her mother was widowed and remarried before the 1871 and Kate appears under the wrong surname?

I think the only option is to get her birth certificate or maybe to get the name of her father from one of her marriage certificates.

Barbara

PS I have tried a lot of variations to pin her down but with no luck at all.
