*Completed*Henry BURGE from Yatton; about 1819
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 11:13 GMT (UK) »
Dear Listers

I am wanting to tie up a piece of research and would appreciate some help.

Henry BURGE was baptised on 7 December 1821 at St Mary the Virgin, Yatton to Benjamin and Jane BURGE.

In 1841, he was living with his  widowed mother Jane, brother John and (widowed) sister Elizabeth in Claverham, Yatton, as follows:

BURGE, Jane        F    58       Somerset
BURGE, John        M    28       Somerset
BURGE, Henry        M    19       Somerset
CANDY, Elizabeth*    F    30       Somerset
CANDY, Eliza        F    6       Somerset
CANDY, Martha        F    3       Somerset

I haven't been able to find him again, except for the following possible sighting in 1851, in St James, Bristol:

BURGE Henry 32 Seaman Clifton Bristol
Elizabeth 32 Shoe Binder Bristol St James

Can anyone spot the correct marriage for this couple? Are they still alive in 1861?

Any help that might confirm what became  of Henry would be very welcome.

Kind regards and thanks

Philip Candy

This is very clever. Thank you.

It actually fits the details much better than the one I found, and there are entries on freebmd under the name BURGE (not BURGES) that look right.

I have even found a possible marriage between Henry BURGE and Mary WALL in 1842 in Bristol that might be right.

Thanks for this suggestion. Can you see this family in later censuses?

Kind regards

Philip

Yes. I am pretty sure this is the right family, but they seem to have done pretty good job of disappearing!

Henry arrived in Melbourne Australia in April 1857. With him were Mary, James, Charles and Elizabeth. Mary died not long after their arrival.

Thank you very much for this.  I didn't think of looking for this family in Australia, but now that you point it out, I can see they came on the Mountstuart Elphinstone in 1857.

It would be great to fill in other details if you have them; especially the dates of death for Mary and Henry, and also any marriages of their children.  Did Charles marry twice (once in 1871 and then following the death of his first wife, in 1880)?

In any case, you have solved a little mystery for me, so thank you very much for making this post.

Kind regards

Hi Philip,

Sorry, I don't have the exact dates of death for Henry or Mary - am still working on them.

Henry remarried Lydia Mayben and had 3 more children:- Harriet, Florrence and George.

Charles did marry twice to:- Mary Sainsbery, whom he had 4 children; Henry, edward, charles and edith
and
:- Louisa alexandra Stewart, whom  he had 14 children to- George, bessie, alberta, ruby, may, herbert, leslie, irene, mary, myra, ray, doris, fred and harold.  Fred is my great grandfather.

I am still attempting too piece it all together, there are a lot of births, deaths and marriages to try and work through!! Hoping that this helps you a little bit.

If your on ancestry, I have most of the tree posted there.

Regards,
Tammy

Thanks so much for this additional information, Tammy

I have managed to find a will for Henry; he died on 23 July 1886. You can access his will via this link: http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=54

In it he mentions Charles, George, Florence and Harriet, as well as Lydia.  Interestingly he worked for the railways; back in England his occupation had been as a wagoner!

Thanks for getting me onto this family link; I can take you back a generation earlier to Benjamin and Jane in Yatton, Somerset if you're interested.

Kind regards

Phil
