Ceylon look up - Worms
« on: Friday 30 January 09 03:27 GMT (UK) »
sorry not sure where to post this...

Last time someone was really useful on Ceylon lookups for me...

Looking for a company called  Joseph & Worms.  Was in West Colombo.  My gg grandfather worked/owned it  Samuel Lewis Worms.  I really want to know if there is any connection to the Worms that ran the Rothschild plantation.

This is where I found the information

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Jen

Have you tried looking for wills at all ??

WORMS, MAURICE BENEDICT DE -

English financier and agriculturist; born in Frankfort-on-the-Main 1805; died in London 1867; grandson of Meyer Anselm de Rothschild, and son of Benedict de Worms, a distinguished member of the Jewish community of Frankfort. On a visit to the Far East in 1841, Maurice and his brother Gabriel de Worms purchased a large estate in Ceylon, which became known as the Rothschild Estate. Acre by acre was added to this estate, which was among the best-cultivated tracts of land in the island; and when the Worms brothers in 1865 disposed of their holdings, they had no less than 2,000 acres under cultivation, and more than 6,000 acres of forest land to be reclaimed. The brothers were among the pioneer settlers in Ceylon, and contributed largely to its prosperity. In his will Maurice de Worms bequeathed large sums of money to various Jewish charitable institutions.

yes they are the Worms.  My gg grandfather Samuel Lewis Worms was there at the same time he married a Matilda Catherine Lyons in Ceylon who was born in Ceylon.  Just trying to make the link between the 3 Worms - seems to be a coincidence that 3 "Worms" were in Ceylon at the same time - especially during that time.  Both sides orginate from Frankfort and seem to have gone to london about 1790-1805?  All "Worms" at the time were in the fabric/textile trade so too many concidences.  Just trying to prove it is hard? perhaps cousins or uncles? Also Samuel went back to the UK with his family and is on the 1861 census but arrives in NZ in 1862.  He had married a woman of mixed breed and was not accepted into the family - only just learnt this.

Any ideas of where to look next would be useful - I have Samuels grandfathers will  (Aaron Worms) but it doesnt mention Samuel - he also died before Samuel went to Ceylon I think.  I have Samuels death cert but it doesnt give me much information - in fact some of it was wrong.

I wonder if your great grandfather (and you) are related to me? I'm a de Vorms from New Zealand, I'm really interested in tracing my ancestry so if we share some ancestors I'd love to know :)

I am trying to find out why Samuel Lewis Worms came to Ceylon and what type of occupation he had.  He was married twice in Ceylon.  My heritage is from his second narrate to Laura Eugenie Worms.

Thanks
Gillian
