You'll need access to the Gale/British Library 19th century newspaper database .. I don't know where you are located but this may be available online via membership of your local/county/state/college library, or else the free trials that come along from time to time.

Hi Ausseabreeze

I was chasing info on the Ship Canton this evening and came across your answer I think, assuming you haven't already done so yourself!  I hope this is useful - and if you have managed to find a photo or drawing of the Canton, I'd love to see it.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)  courtesy of Trove:  http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12903444

"WRECK OF THE SHIP CANTON, AND
LOSS OF TWENTY LIVES, 4 Oct 1848
By the Rosetta Joseph we regret to say in-
telligence has been received of the total wreck
of the ship Canton, 507 tons, Captain David
Friend, and the loss of twenty lives. The
Canton arrived in Sydney on the 12th of June
last, with immigrants, and sailed again for
China on the 3rd September. The voyage was
a prosperous one up to the 4th October, when,
at 4 A.M., during a very heavy gale, the ship
going at the rate of ten knots, she ran stern on
to the island of Tinian, one of the Marian
Group, situated in lat. 14.58 N., long.
145.50 E., and in ten minutes was a
total wreck. One of the seamen named
William Foxal, and a boy, succeeded
in cutting away the gripes of the life-boat, but
before they could get it lowered, it was stove
by the fall of the mainmast. They succeeded,
however, in getting in, and shortly after picked
up the second mate (Thomas Avent) the
third mate (William Thompson), and a sea-
man. After ten hours drifting in the boat,
they reached the shore, being all who were
saved out of twenty-five on board. They
were treated with great kindness by the resi-
dents on the island, and after remaining there
nine days were forwarded in canoes to Guam, a
distance of 300 miles, and from thence to Manila

in a Spanish vessel. The cargo of the
Canton consisted of 12 horses, 16 cows, H.
Moore ; 2 horses, D. Friend ; and 80 bags
0ats, George Small. The following are the
names of the crew, besides those saved, who
sailed from Sydney in the vessel : - John
Stamp (mate), John Blyrendon, T. W. Hy-
rons, William Kemp, George Gardner, Charles
Miles, G. C. Rule, Richard Pearce, John Duff,
John Teazer, J. Anderson, Edward Sinclair,
James Gray, George Rogers, Richard Smith,
John Davis, George White, R. H. Jenkins,
David Jones, and William Carll, seamen. The
names of one of the seamen and the boy saved
we have been unable to ascertain. --o0o--"

Hi CrazyNH

Thank you for your reply to my post of some years ago.  Your contribution is much appreciated and  very interesting, I will add it to the information I already have managed to acquire.

What is your interest in the Canton?

Many thanks
Ausseabreeze
