Amesbury RD & Young SHEPPARD
« on: Monday 02 February 09 18:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys

I don't know anything about Wiltshire and it's regional layout so I was hoping that one with more expertise could offer some advice.

I've got a gent living in London in 1901 who states he was born in Amesbury, Wiltshire. This is backed up by the GRO entry for his birth;

1855 Q4 Amesbury,5a 146

I have a choice of two hits for him on previous census returns to try to get back another generation

1871 England Census has a Young Sheppard born in Sailsbury, Wiltshire. Father is Jacob, mother is Jane

1861 England Census has a Young Sheppard born in Figheldean, Wiltshire.
Father is not mentioned, mother is Jane but she is not a widow.

However in 1871 it doesn't say that Young is a step son to Jacob so I think they are the same family.

How close together are Figheldean and Sailsbury? Would they be counted as the same place as Amesbury?

Young is quite an uncomman name and my "gut" instinct says these are correct but it never hurts to get a second opinion!

TIA

Fighealdene is within the Amesbury Regn District.

I'd guess he used Salisbury as the nearest big town in later years ?

His age is consistant in all the census years, and his parents seem to have brought him to London by 1871 ...

Get his marriage Cert to reveal his Fathers name and thus cross-check its Jacob :)

Thanks Newf

Was hoping there would be a way to narrow it down without having to purchase the MC.

Thanks Newf

You've been a big help.

Now i just have to find them in London between 1871 and 1901, 1901 is the next time they pop up. I suspect transcription error on A******Y!!

1891 is the only one missing on Ancestry - make sure you search on SHEP* tho .... and omit any PoB

1881 - PoB is Calne !, he's a 'Soap Cutter'

They should be in the Lewisham / Sydenham area in 1891 - as evidenced by:-

Births Dec 1890

Sheppard  Ellen Florence    Lewisham  v1d p1076

but dunno how they are hiding !
