BUTCHER brothers from Twerton - help please
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 15:15 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if someone could please help me to find these two men - perhaps brothers - in 1861 and 1871.

Jesse was born about 1823 in Twerton, Somerset and Benjamin some time around 1826 or 1827.

There is some confusion about whether Benjamin was born in Somerset or in Wiltshire, so any help in sorting this out would be most welcome.

Kind regards

BUTCHER brothers from Twerton - help please

Dear listers

I have a posted a request for help with census lookups for two men - Jesse BUTCHER born 1823 and Benjamin BUTCHER born about 1829 - in or near Twerton (see: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,358670.0.html) but to my surprise no-one seems to be able to see them in 1861 or 1871, even though they were both alive in 1881.

From the indexes, it looks as if Jesse was in the Frome RD in 1861 and in Clifton, Bristol in 1871. Benjamin - if it's the right person - was in Bath RD in both 1861 and 1871.

Can someone with Somerset interests please have a look for me?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for tracking them down. Here they are in 1851, so I'd say this is definitely the right person:

1851 Census of Twerton, Som
BUTCHER Jesse 28 Dyer Twerton, Som.
Martha 32 Twerton, Som.
Maria 8 Scholar Twerton, Som.

Kind regards

Phil

Hi Phil,

Don't know if this is the right Jesse Butcher

1871   5 Richmond Street Southside,Bristol,Glos
Jesse Butcher Head Widower 48 Railway Engine Driver   Wiltshire,Trowbridge
Phoebe Vincent Mother-in-law Widow 71 Annuitant   Wiltshire,Salisbury
Sarah Ann Leictern(?) Neice unmarried 19 Miliner& Dressmaker   Middlesex,Paddington
(Martha Vincent married Jesse Butcher in Somerset 1842

I notice in 1851 Jesse Butcher b1823 Somerset,Twerton is living with wife Martha Butcher and
daughter Maria Butcher in Twerton,Somerset.
and next door to them is
Edward Butcher 62 born Wiltshire,Trowbridge and his son Benjamin Butcher 21 born Somerset,Twerton

Don't know if this helps or confuses ::)

Not having as much luck with Benjamin   :-\

The only Benjamn Butcher I can see living in Twerton was born in Trowbridge, Wilts  -  his wife was Mary.

Do you know anything about who Benjamin might have been married to ?

This is really helpful, especially as Jesse's wife was originally Martha VINCENT, so it makes sense  that his mother in law was Phoebe VINCENT.

The other name is also very helpful; I wonder if it could be Sarah Ann LINTERN, since two women named BUTCHER appear on the same page as a Joseph LINTERN in freebmd marraiges in 1846, which suggests that Sarah Ann was perhaps a daughter of Jesse's sister Sarah.

Many thanks

Thanks Sue

This is very helpful, as it suggests that one or other of Jesse's sisters married someone named LINTERN.

Could I ask you to see if you can find Sarah Ann LINTERN at home in 1861, as she may be with her Mum and Dad?

Thanks again

Phil
