Hi Clare

Checking the National Archives Catalogue for Amos draws a blank. That probably means that his papers have not survived. They have indexed all surviving papers for men discharged before the end of 1854.

If you cannot get to Kew you will have to employ a researcher to look in the Muster Books and Pay Lists (WO12) for the 73rd Foot. This will list all men in that regiment at the time.

You might want to see if you can get hold of this book...

"Under a Tropical Sun": Lachlan Macquarie and the 73rd Regiment in Sri Lanka 1796-1821, by Robin Walsh (Macquarie University Library)

And have a look here

http://www.lib.mq.edu.au/digital/under/documents/1814/17august.html

And here...

http://www.lib.mq.edu.au/digital/under/documents/1818/15august.html

And herein is the email of the chap who knows all (and wrote the book !)

One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Hi Clare.
I also lose the trail at Amos Hoppo. My grandfather was a Hoppo. Have you had any success with India or Sri Lanka?
I had read on ancestry.com that he went from Sri Lanka to India Scotland and Australia with Lachlan Macquarie.
