gggg grandmother Jemima Crookston
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 01:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I have just received this photo of my gggg Grandmother Jemima Crookston. I was wondering whether anyone could firstly date it for me and secondly do a nice clean up and maybe even some colour.
Many Thanks
Wren

Hi Wren  :)

It's a bit hard to see as it looks like it's a photocopy or something...lots of little dots - but judging by the shoulders and neckline I'd go for early 1890s.

Lucky you to have a photo of such a distant ancestor - my 4xgreats were all born back in the late 18th century and I don't have any photos of them at all!

Cheers
Prue

It looks like a photocopy of a newsprint, no resolution
at all, and this is the best I can do.

Hi Mike
I'm not sure what it is. The lady who sent it to me said she couldn't remember who gave it to her. It came as an attachment. I was extremely pleased to have any kind of likeness,as I've always wondered what she looked like. Your art work is just fantastic.
Thanks for your time and effort, she looks great. Much appreciated.
Wren

Hi Prue
Thanks for your help. I think you are right. She was born 1816 and died 1891. My guess is this was taken not long before she died. Unless! I just had a thought this was taken of her when she died, as the sometime did. She was 75 at the time of her death.
Thanks again
Wren

H Wren...I'm pretty sure your ancestor was living at the time this photo was taken. I have seen quite a few examples of postmortem photography and the subjects look...dead. I mean, there's really no mistaking it :P

So, I'd say this photo was made in the normal way. :)

Cheers,

Hi China
Thanks. I have never seen a photo taken post mortem, so I wasn't really sure. I was so excited to get this photo, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would find anyone from this side of the family. I've been looking for quite some years. I know there are others because they are mentioned in my gggg grandfathers will 1899. I just have to locate some of the descendants.
I think Jemima's demeanor speaks volumes and is to be greatly admired. Thanks again
Wren.
