Female Imigration Scheme. & Family Colonisation Loan Society.
« on: Monday 09 February 09 12:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Out there somewhere is a list of females who migrated per the Sir Sidney Herbert Female Emmigration Scheme, 1851.
The passenger list is available with all the rules they had to abide by, what they could take with them, instructions for the chaplian, surgeon and matron etc.
I've read that there are also lists of names, proffessions, conditions, birth places etc from when the young ladies were boarding with Mrs Herbert before they went to NZ and  Australia. I've tried to find these but from Australia it's an uphill battle.
I think 5 ships came to Australia and one to NZ, before the scheme was abandoned.
I'm interested in the list for the STATELY which went to NZ in 1851.My Great Great Grandmother, Elizabeth DAVIS was aboard the Stately. She claimed on her marriage cert that she was born in London in 1831. This is all the information I have about her.
If anyone can locate the information taken of the young ladies who were aboard Stately I would be most grateful.
Leonie.

Modified; I've modified the title of this thread because I've found nothing and something.  ;D

It seems that this was also know as the Female Emigration Fund. Wiltshire and Swindon archives appear to have a little bit on it. I would contact them to ask - there's entries such as:
(searching http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ )

Quote
2057/F8/VIII/40 List of females with occupations, ages and their protection on the voyage - ie. the family they are grouped with.

Quote
2057/F8/VIII/50 Emigrants from London - Saint Georges, Shadwell, Southwark, Holban and Westminster, home, previous occupation and employment obtained in Australia.

I would contact them  - the emigrants from London file seems likely to have something on your Elizabeth.

Thanks heaps jorose.  ;D
Just goes to show my memory isn't as bad as I thought it was. Also goes to prove you should never throw away anything relating to family history.
I'll get on to the National Archives and have another look now that I know where to look.

Thanks again,
Leonie.

Just to make it clear - it's Wiltshire and Swindon archives who hold these files, the NA link is the 'a2a' site which allows some searching of catalogues from different archives around the country.

Yes, thanks.  ;D
I found the Wiltshire & Swindon site. I've got file numbers and will go back to their site tomorrow and email them.
The document mentioned in the particular file is at least a start. It didn't mention actuall birth places, just names, accupations etc. But it may have something more than I have now. Which is zilch.  ;D

I am pretty sure you won't find the information you are looking for in this memoir but you might find out more about the thought process behind the emigration schemes.

I didn't check it out so I am sorry if it is a waste of your time.

That's OK, I can handle a little bit of grim, so long as there's not too much. :-\
