y-dna testing
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 12:49 GMT (UK) »
I just wondered whether anyone here has had any experience of dna testing in their research and how useful it was in finding new family links.

Also where would the best place be to have the testing done?

Regards

Dave,

My Father submitted his ‘sample’ earlier this month and we are currently awaiting the results, so cannot comment with regards to new family links at present.

We initially used a Surname DNA Project Website who were able to provide discounted rates for the DNA Tests, which are being done via www.familytreedna.com

If you look on this site, you will be able to see what Surname Projects are currently in force and therefore join a specific group. You will see that there is a “Rhodes” group, if that is the surname you are looking into which leads you onto their own website and gives a lot more information

I haven't done yet, but this site looks interesting

http://www.familytreedna.com/

They are coordinating the search for specific surnames so theoretically after the test is done you'll be able to trace your name back and see where it is likely to link with others of your surname. All the tests are are done via the website but links back to the specific surname project.

Edit: Snap  :)

Recommend http://isogg.org (International Society of Genetic Genealogists) website, which provides impartial information about the various types of testing and what a tester may expect to get in terms of results.
