These appear to be the character sequences ito beware of. If you use [Preview] you'll see straightaway if you've inadvertantly added a smiley, and the solution is usually just to add a space between the characters.

If you type the characters before the equals sign WITHOUT SPACES BETWEEN THEM then a smiley is automatically inserted:

: ) = :)
; ) = ;)
: D = :D
> : ( = >:(
: ( = :(
: o = :o
8 ) = 8)
? ? ? = ???
: : ) = ::)
: P = :P
: - [ = :-[
: - X = :-X
: - \ = :-\
: - * = :-*
: ' ( = :'(
