Royal Navy Service Record help please
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I need some help in understanding my Great Grandad's Royal Navy Service record. I have outlined the bit i am confused about in red.

Between 1897 and 1914 was he in the Navy as there are no ships listed.

I know from the censuses that he was a Crane Driver in 1901 and an Engine Driver for the Margate Pier and Harbour Company in 1911.

Thank you in advance.

Looks like he was discharged at some point, because the 2nd sentance says "re-enrolled <date> for 8 years...etc

Yes of course Daisy Loo i see that it now says :

'Re-enrolled'

I thought is said 'Reenroller'.  Silly me.

Yes he was discharged in 1897 due to Heart Desease.

If he Re-enrolled for 8 years why is he an Engine Driver in Margate in the 1911 census ? Why no ships given ?

Im still confused  :-\

The bit circled in red says (as far as I can make it out):
"Joined RFR Chatham B1610 - 31 Oct 03
Re-enrolled 26/10/07 for 5 yrs from 31/10/08"

In other words he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve.
So he was discharged from the Navy in 1897, but later became a reservist. He wasn't actively in the Royal Navy during those years, but as a trained navy man he was still a valuable member of the reserve. The implication of this is that he was liable to immediate recall to active service in the case of emergency (WW1 was just such an emergency).
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Hello neil1821

Thank you for your very informative answer.

So from 1897 to 1914 he was not in the Navy but ready to be called up.  Excellent.  :)

Yes 1914 was just such an emergency.

I did wonder how he managed with his wife to create 9 children from 1899 to 1912. He was at home all those years !   ;)
