Was that National Service as opposed to Conscription....is there any difference anyway?

Conscription was for warfighting, National Service was "peacetime" (Although I use the word carefully ;D)

Nothing from 1919-1939....
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come

He would have either been a full time regular soldier, a part time territorial...

 Or...

Had been receiving treatment for wounds received during the war, these of course could be physical wounds or psychiatric wounds and was not yet discharged from WW1 service.

That style of uniform was worn right through until 1940 in some units, 1937 in most units though....

Looks like he could have been either a regular between the wars...Shame we cannot see the shoulder titles!

A chance he could have been TA though ...

Hi Eilleen,
Sorry - I was hoping to have had a rely from NA re the information in William Spencer's book, but no-one has replied (left another message with a member of staff couple of days ago), and I feel it's probably best to leave it now.
Must be busy.
Paulene :)
Looks as if you are in good hands :)

Eilleen,
This is a bit late, but I went to London to the Who Do You Think You Are show (was given two free tickets :D) and who did I bump into on the National Archives stand but William Spencer!
Apparently my phone call came just before he went on leave, and that's why he didn't get back to me.
He said that the facts in his book are correct, and that the older age of 56 was approved towards the end of the war (and, as some men in active service were in their 60s) provided the men had no dependants. Very interesting and helpful guy.
Thought I'd put it on the post in case anyone is still wondering.
Take care,
Paulene :)
