Hi all,

Trying to trace Barbara Boyd born abt. 1826 ish to Peter Boyd and Elizabeth Crombie.  Death certificate in 1905 states she was illegitimate.  She had three children to George Allan, ploughman - children were Betsy Allan, Mary Ann Allan and Jessie Allan.  It appears Barbara spent most if not all her years in Dunning as a washerwoman/charwomen/laundress.  She appears to have been unmarried throughout her life.  Betsy Allan married my great grandfather James Ritchie.  Any information would be appreciated.

Ian

Hello Cath,

My grandfather James Andrew Ritchie was born at Roundlaw Ploughman's Cottage, Trinit Gask in 1901.  I have very little information about his brother's and sisters.  His father had two wives, Betsy Allan (first wife) and Janet Ramsay (second wife).  I believe the Barbara you refer to may be the Barbara born to James and Betsy in 1891.  This would mean she is a half sister to my grandfather, and your mother is his niece making us cousins?  I would like to take this further if I could in a more direct fashion.  I am on (*)

Hi Ian

Don’t get to excited.

I do not know much about the Richie family.

I only found out that my mum was born at Roundlaw Farm Trinity Gask
a few weeks ago (never heard of it before),, it was on her Birth Certificate,
which we had to show The Works and Pensions to get a Telegram from the Queen.

I just put Roundlaw Trinity Gask in Google and spotted that some one was looking for the Richie family.

My mums maiden was Isabella Richie Guthrie.

Her mother Barbara Richie  (married name Barbara Guthrie)
she had one brother David Richie..

My mum thought her gran was called Isabella couldn’t remember her granddad’s name. (think William).

She said her mum (Barbara Richie) was born in Dunning.

My mum did say her Gran was married twice and she had step sisters but they went abroad and never kept in touch.

But I thought she said his surname was Brand  ….at a 100 you forget.

I saw your e-mail address, but I when I came back a few hours later it had been deleted
for security reasons.

Remembered the last bit after @ .........  but not the first bit.

Cath

Hi Cath,

Yes, I did get a bit excited.  You are the first family on my granddad's side that I have made contact with.  Having calmed down, this is how we are related:

Isabella Ritchie Guthrie born 1909 to Barbara Guthrie (nee Ritchie) and William Guthrie who married 6th July 1910.  Barbara Guthrie (nee Ritchie) was born 1st August 1890 at Inverdunning, Dunning to Isabella Baldie Ritchie.  Isabella had two children out of wedlock - Barbara and David Ritchie.  Isabella subsequently married Henry Brand on the 4th January 1900.  Your great grandmother Isabella was my grandfather James' half sister from their father's first marriage.

I havn't found evidence of a second marriage for Isabella prior to 1933 so I am not sure about that nor do I have any information regarding any Brand children from the marriage.

Hope to hear from you again soon.

Ian

Hello Cath and Ian

My name is David Walker.  I wonder if you could possibly help me.  My father recently passed away and I only then learned that he had been adopted.  His birth certificate shows his mother as Isabella Ritchie Guthrie born 9.7.09 in Auchterarder. His name was David Guthrie at birth.  He was born in Glasgow on 4.11.31.  I have since been trying to trace his family and my research ties in with yours and so I was very pleased and surprised to see this post.   The other information I have researched ties in with what you have on this site including Isabella's parents/grandparents and her parents marriage certificate a year after Isabella was born. I am wondering if you were aware of my dad's birth and would be delighted to hear from you.

Thank you
David
