Does anyone have access to the parish registers for Shrivenham? I am trying to find the baptism of Elizabeth Jones.

Hope someone can help.

Matt

Hi Matt, you don't give approx. years, but perhaps these will be of use.

BETTY JONES ch 4th July1773 Shrivenham. Father William Jones, Mother Elizabeth.

ELIZABETH JONES ch 6th Jun 1847 Shrivenham. Father Benjamin Jones, Mother Mary.

Both are extracted entries from the IGI.

Hi

Yes sorry I should have included a date, doh! Elizabeth married Thomas Keene of Wanborough in Shrivenham in 1786 and I estimate she was born c1766 or possibily earlier.

This would rule these two out though.

Thanks again.

Matt

Hello,
I can't find your Elizabeth Jones in Shrivenham PRs but if it helps narrow down your year search, then at her marriage she was described as "a minor with consent of parents". So she must have been born after 1765 to be under 21.

Hi

That's a good point! I have a copy of the parish register entry for her marriage but never even thought about the age - even though I looked at it when posting my first message. Oh well back to the research board.

Thanks agian

Hi Matt, just seen Vicwinann's post, this puts Betty 1773 back in the running.
Remember christening dates are not the same as birth dates, frequently not even the same year.

Thanks

There is also another Betty born 1765 in Buscot only 5 miles from Shrivenham so that will be worth checking as well. At least I now have some possible leads. I'm just glad she wasn't from Wales lol!

I have just gone back to my notes on the Jones in Shrivenham and Elizabeth was christened there on 30 October 1763. Her parents were William and Mary Jones.

William and Mary had 6 other children - Mary (Feb 1746), William (Sep 1749), John (Sep 1751), Walter (Jan 1754), George (Sept 1758) and Joseph (Sep 1758).

Given that the first child was born in 1746 I suspect that William may have been married more than once. It is possible that he was married 3 times, firstly before 1746, then at some point between 1751 and 1758, and lastly between 1758 and 1763.

I'm still on the hunt for the marriage of William and Mary Jones (parents of Elizabeth and the others) so any suggestions would be welcomed.

Matt
