1841-51-61 Census Request - Frying Pan Farm - Broughton Gifford
« on: Sunday 13 February 05 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help with a census look-up 1841 - 51 - 61 for Frying Pan Farm in Broughton Gifford, between Melksham & Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire?

In 1871 I think Abraham Feltham Richards, (aged 24) Farm Baliff was living there with his wife Susan (aged 26), but I would like to know if he had been there 10 years earlier as I am trying to build a picture of the development of the farm.

Other addresses in the area are Homebrook, Slippery Lane, Challymead and Monkton Farm.

Hi Patsy
I'm afraid I don't have 1861 census for Wilts.
Did the family come from Melksham originally do you think?
Could this be them?

There are lots of other Richards in the same place.
If anyone can supply you with 1861 details perhaps this will give you a clue.

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the information. Yes the family could have come from Melksham, because even today you can see Melksham Church across the fields from the farm.

I am not sure from your reply the source of your information if you don't have the 1861 census return, but I have found an Abraham F. Richards born before June 1847 in Melksham Vol. 8 p.371 so he would have been 4 at the time of the 1851 census.

Thank you once again, all pieces of information are a great help.

Hi Patsy
Sorry I didn't make it quite clear.
Yes that was a transcription of 1851 census.

1841 ... Frying Pan Farm doesn't seem to be listed in Broughton Gifford and Elizabeth Sly is living elsewhere in the village with her 75-yr old father. (No occupation listed for him.)  Perhaps it was known by a different name at this point?

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your help, and sorry for the late reply, but I have only just found it.

I have now also seen the 1841 entry for Elizabeth Sly, with her father Jasper and think they may still have been living at Frying Pan farm although the census entry does not give the name. Wherever they are living it is between "Challeymead" & "Dunkirk Mill" more or less where Frying Pan Farm is today.

I have also spotted a death index for Jasper Sly, March 1843, Bradford [on-Avon] Volume 8 page 204 which would mean he died shortly after the 1841 census, and give a reason why Elizabeth was running the farm in 1851.

Going back to the 1841 census can you make out the names of the other two residents? I can only make out Mary ? age 60 born in County, & ? Buck aged 20 also born in county.

Thanks again for your help, a second pair of eyes is most welcome.
Best Wishes,
Patsy
