Query about Egypt photos
« on: Monday 16 February 09 20:05 GMT (UK) »
In my late aunt's effects, I found a photo stuck in the pages of a book.  It's of two women, presumably seeing the sights of Egypt, in the ?1930s.  Neither women look like anyone from my family. (I can't post this photo as yet, because Rootschat says it's too large - I need to fiddle with it!)

On the back of the photo, there is this inscription.  My French isn't too good, so if anyone could translate it?

Many thanks for any ideas about this photo.

Given up with the original photo - too big to post....  I'm still doing something wrong in Irfan.  Baah.... any help would be appreciated, as usual!

The original photo shows two young women on camels, with a backdrop of a pyramid/sphinx.

Hi both,

Clara, I'm afraid the text is only framing instructions

(can't read first word)
Mettre sur carton ?crin?
noir cadre droit

Put on black cardboard - straight frame   :-\

Thanks, Bob - I have gone through the resizing instructions, but when I save the 'new' size in Irfan, it just reverts back to the old, large one when I open it again.  ???

And thanks, Tati!  I guess the ladies will have to remain mysteries (ones that Rootschat isn't going to see anyway!).

best wishes

Did you "Save as ...." with a new name ??
Did you check where the new file was saved to ?
Maybe it's there, on your computer, but somewhere you hadn't expected  :)

Hi Tati,

My schoolgirl French (and, boy, was that many decades ago!) suggested to me that they were framing instructions.  But I thought I'd better leave it to a French speaker  :)

Anyway, I've now looked in my French dictionary and it says that 'crin' means horsehair.
And Googling finds that the French word is widely used for horsehair (either from horses or currently a polyester equivalent) in English speaking countries.
Hmmm ....

Hi JAP,

I'm really not sure about the crin bit. It's the only word that I was able to make out of it, but it doesn't really seem to make sense in the context! I was hoping to find a reference to carton crin being a special sort of cardboard used in framing (was thinking of a specific pattern, maybe) but couldn't find anything.

I'm hopeful another pair of French-reading eyes will see what I can't :)
