Brickwall - Thomas ASHTON
« on: Monday 16 February 09 20:07 GMT (UK) »
For some time now I have been trying to find out what happened to my ancestor Thomas Ashton. He was born in 1864 in St Giles,Middlesex.  I have found out that he was a sailor, and I have acquired his naval record from the National Archives.
My problem is that his naval record ends in 1886 when he was sent to what looks like Bodmin Jail. The writing is not very clear.I cannot find him on any subsequent censuses.
Does anyone have any idea of where I  can look next, as this is really frustrating.

Any help that anyone can give me will be most gratefully received.

Hello No luck on the census search

On Genuki Cornwall  Bodmin Prison to South Australia  Uk assisted passages 1847-1886 project of immigrants.   Sounds to me it is referring to prisoners. So worth trying to find a list.

Also looked  under title Corrective Institution Cornwall  gave Executions at Bodmin Prison.. no Thomas Ashton.

It did mention old prison records available at Cornwall records Office.

Hope it helps.

Hi Pam,

I do not see anything about Bodmin Gaol and South Australian Emigration in the same sentence. I am sure prisoners were not brought here. What are you looking at?

I see separate references to Bodmin Gaol (under correctional institutions) and (UK, assisted passage) 1847-1886 project. (under emigration from the UK)

Hi Pam,

You will find this is all Genuki Listings for Cornwall.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/index.html

It is not all re Bodmin Gaol - just Cornwall General Page by Genuki.

One reference is listed under Correctional Institutions the other for  Emigration & Immigration.

Cheers Kris  :)
