Lurgan/Waringstown
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 13:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My gg grandpa has been entered on the censuses up to 1901 as having been born in Lurgon, Co. Down. Now in the 1911 he has put Waringstown (or something similar - it is difficult to read - and he a clerk!) Co. Down. Are they near, is one a part of the other? Sorry my Irish geography is terrible.

Thanks
Brie

Thank-you,

That sounds very helpful as it should help narrow my search.

Forgot to add - Would it be Warringstown, Lurgan or Lurgan, Warringstown or are they pretty much the same size?

Lurgan is the larger by far.
If you mean postal address now, it would be Waringstown Craigavon.

I have a reasonable connection with Waringstown, can I help you further.

Hello Otto,

I was wondering if you may know of any history of my Hand family from Warinsgtown and they too can be found in Lurgan.

I have informtion to my William Hand b.1862 ? died in Waringstown but I am unsure if he married a woman named  Elizabeth Matthews.

One of their sons Samuel is on the Waringstown memorial banner.http://www.ulsterwarmemorials.net/html/waringstown.html

Other names are Neill ( maybe from Loughgilly) Reilly (Cavan), Rowan mixture of Church of Ire & Presbyterian.

Thanks

Laura

Laura,
I looked at your link and noticed that it was a War Memorial so I looked up Samuel Hand on the Commonwealth War Graves Coommission website and found-

Samuel Hand, Rifleman, 16 Bn Royal Irish Rifles, Killed in Action 17 Oct 1917 aged 21, Son of William and Elizabeth Hand of Mill Hill, Waringstown. He was interred in Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery.

Hi Laura,
Elizabeth Matthews and William Hand were married on 5th Jan 1883 in Waringstown Presbyterian Church. Here is the family in 1911 census :
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Waringstown/Waringstown_Town/253521/

William was the same age as my Great grandfather, who lived two doors away from the Hand's on Mill Hill Waringstown.

I was fortunate to work in the same factory as one of the Hand's in Lisburn, a quiet gentleman, who was most respected.

The details of William's marriage can be obtained from GRONI for £6, if you supply them with the following : Volume 1 page 835 , and the registration district of Lurgan. That should supply you with parents names etc....
Unfortunately, like my own ancestor, it seems he was born before Civil Registration began in 1864, but you may well find his birth record in a local church.

Good luck
OTTO
