Streets of Sunderland
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 15:56 GMT (UK) »
Many of my ancestors came from Sunderland, I would love to know more about where they lived, I've tried looking for info on the following streets and schools, but seem to be coming to a dead end, photos would be fantastic but any info at all would be very much appreciated, no doubt many of these places no longer exist or the transcribers may have misspelt them when completing census returns, here goes

Hodgkin Street
45 Barnes Lane
2 Oak Street,
Aubrey Terrace
4/5 Ettrick Place
15 and 43 Spring Garden Lane
36 Baines lane
11 Robinson Lane
5 Mordey Street
8 tyne/lyme street
24 Stafford Street
20 Cousin Street Hendon
Carr's Yard, East End
41 South Durham Street
St Patrick's RC school
St Mary's RC school
Chester oval
23 Chester Terrace

Hi Stan

Thanks for the help, it's so sad to see how much of Sunderland has gone, but even my Dad could remember growing up in the tenements in the 1920's/30's, he's no longer with us now, but he would recall living in the Chester's.  I did manage to find his birthplace 27 Church Street.  Were the houses always white or have they all been painted white to match I wonder?  I was looking on a Sunderland property website and saw a photo of them.

Hi Stan

Many thanks, will have a look now, keep saying one day I'll go visit Sunderland to see how much of it is still there from Dad's childhood and that of his ancestors, it helps to know how much is left. His ancestors from 1800 and earlier were mainly Gainford/Staindrop and Kirkcaldy in Fife  and Ireland so that's going back too far, no census or bmd for help with addresses there.   My Mum's family were mainly Yorkshire and Lincs, with a few from Northern Ireland too.

St Patrick's RC school was at the junction of Sussex Street and Coronation Street
St Mary's RC school was in Pan Lane, and later in  Chester Road  where it was  opened in the old infirmary  building in 1902. It is now part of Sunderland University.
