BAILEY Family - Ipswich
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 15:35 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my GG Grandad and grandmother. I have found them on the 1891 census and also 1901. Their names were James Robert Hazelwood Bailey and Elizabeth Bailey (nee Goldsmith).

They were bakers and my mother seems to think that they ran/owned had a shop.
Does anyone know where I can find out about this?
The address on the census's is 52 and 50 Orford Street Ipswich (St Matthews). It took me a while to figure out it was Orford and not Oxford!

James died in 1901 but his eldest son has an occupation of baker in the 1901 census. I'm assuming he carried on the tradition.

I have been going around in circles trying to find out about this shop.
There is a off-license (I think) at 50 orford road, could that have once been the bakery?

If anyone has any information and can help me I would be forever grateful.
At the moment most of my research is done by computer because I live in Hertfordshire.

Thanks again.

Alison

Hi

Have you tried the historical directories website?

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Kelly's Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk, 1892 lists a James Robert Bailey as a baker at 52 Orford Road in Ipswich.

Hi Alison

Is this the birth entry for James Bailey?

James Robert Hazelwood Bailey
Apr-May-Jun 1860
District : Thingoe
Suffolk
4a
??

The page number is illegible.

An IGI submitted record has him born on the 16th March 1860 and marrying Elizabeth Goldsmith in 1882.

THANK YOU ALL.

Thank you so much for the replies, I'm so excited to have that advert, that is amazing! Thank you suffolk*sue. How did you find it?

Ben - I will try the link thank you for that and I assume that is the biruth entry. The information I have is his DOB is 16/3/1860 in Whepstead, so would Thingoe be the registration district?

If anyone else has any information that would be greatly appreciated.

I look through the records and have found another address for him in Crown Street.

Does anyone know where I could find historic photos?

We have several books of old photographs of Ipswich at home, David Kindred and Robert Malster are names to look out for.

I will try and check the books later today and let you know if I find anything - you can then perhaps order same through inter-library links.

There are some historic photographs of the Over Stoke area of Ipswich at http://www.bbc.co.uk/suffolk/history/features/ click on Over Stoke Gallery and on Going Over Stoke.  Different part of the town, but gives you an idea of Ipswich past.

Sense of Place Suffolk is behind with its re-launch, but there may be photographs on there http://www.senseofplacesuffolk.co.uk/

Yes, the Thingoe district around Bury St Edmunds includes the parish of Whepstead.

Regarding Orford and Oxford, we also have a large village called Yoxford and the railway line from Ipswich runs through there.  However, the station was built a mile or two down the road from Yoxford at Darsham.
The reason being that Yoxford could be confused with Oxford.

Pat ...

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?
