Samuel Hood-Hammond
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 21:54 GMT (UK) »
Samuel changed his Hood surname to Hammond prior to going to NZ and Australia. He married Hilda May Blandford 25.05.1927 in Chatswood, giving home address of 350 George Street Sydney. Would appreciate any other addressess on 1930 and 1936 electoral reggies if possible.

Thanks once again,

John

Hi John,

Here they are in 1930

HAMMOND Samuel Hood 43 Nelson St Lindfield Merchant
HAMMOND Hilda Mary Home Duties

I see he didn't die until 1963 but am not having joy so far in 1936

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris,
Thanks for that. Yes he died 11.5.1963 and given address then was 290 new south head road double bay. As a matter of interest his daughter was the famous Australian Opera singer DAME Joan Hilda Hood Hammond.

Hello, obviously I’m very late to this party, but if anyone is still looking at Samuel Hood Hammond, father of Dame Joan Hammond, who married Hilda May Blandford in 1927 after a possibly less-than-ideal departure from Britain some 15 or so years earlier, I would love to hear from you. Samuel was my great grandfather, and while I have some information about his life here in Australia and a few photos and a business card of his, we don’t know anything about his parents or family in the UK.
John Hood, can I assume your interest in Samuel came from sharing an ancestor with him, and by extension, me?
Any information appreciated if you’re still tuned in to this chat.
Regards,
Hammo.

From Ancestry.com.au, I have the following:

1933 NSW Electoral Roll: Hilda May Renown Hammond
1936 NSW Electoral Roll: Hilda May Renown Hammond 23 Holbrook Ave, Milson's Point, Sydney
                                     Joan Hammond   at same address

1943 NSW Electoral Roll: Hilda May, Anthony Hood Hammond, Samuel Hood Hammond jnr 290 Sth Head Rd, Edgecliffe.
Also worth considering from Trove.nla.gov.au is a High Court notice for committal August 1932 of Samuel Hood Hammond.. seems to be bankruptcy but not expert in deciphering legal stuff.
Perhaps this explains his absence?

Thank you shume, I will look those up. I did hear from my grandfather (Samuel Jnr) that his family had lost everything in the depression, prior to that they were in Killara and owned land at Palm Beach, so the movements and bankruptcy fit the picture. I have quite a few photos of them from the 1930s on. Many thanks and regards for replying,
Mike Hammond (hammo).

There are a couple of early possible sightings for S  H HAMMOND in NSW.
Without the printing of his whole name, one cannot be certain it is the correct person of course, but, for your interest.

1915 Taking over the management of a company S. H. Hammond

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/239359508
1918 sighting of S. H. Hammond as company director

There are some nice newspaper photographs of him and his wife and children including Joan.
Have you seen them?

Sue

ADDING
This sighting in 1920 is a certainty.

Hello sparrett, thank you, those are interesting. I have a lot of photos of Dame Joan and some of her scrapbooks that didn't go to the National Library with her papers. I also have a few photos from the 30s on, including one from 1936 when she left for Vienna, posing with her whole family before getting on the ship. Joan's life is well-documented, but what I can't work out is where Samuel Hood Hammond came from. My grandfather understood he left a wife in the UK and possibly debt, seems he was quite the rogue entrepreneur! Anyway, thanks for replying, I appreciate it.
Hammo.

When he arrived in New Zealand in 1912, the record shows he had obviously been with Hilda long enough to have 2 children, Noel 1909 and Stephen 1910.
