*COMPLETED* - SMITH/SIMMONS Edgmond c.1852
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 16:11 GMT (UK) »
I just rec'd a birth certificate for Matthew Simmons born May 17, 1865 in Edgmond; father is George Simmons and mother is Sarah Smith.
Is this the same George Simmons who married Sarah Treavor in 1844 in Hinstock, or are they two separate people?
There is a Sarah Simmons who died in 1852 in Newport, so Sarah Smith could be the second marriage for George.  Any ideas about how to determine this.
Also, any info on Sarah Smith and her parents would be appreciated.
Thanks,
cassiar

Hello

On http://www.freebmd.org.uk/, in the first quarter of 1853 there is a marriage registration for a George Simmonds at Newport Shropshire. The GRO reference is 6a 1160. On that list there are two males and only one female.

On the full GRO index there is also a Sarah Smith listed against that reference.

On the 1851 census, George’s wife is shown to have been born c1822 at Stoke, Shropshire. On the later censuses his wife is shown to have been born c1828 at Edgmond. It certainly now looks like they were two different wives.

I wonder if the Visitor/House Servant at William and Mary Simcock's house in 1851 could be the lady that George married in 1853 ....

There is this family on the 1841 census ....

Newport HO107/905/2 Folio 14 Page 6

John Smith 52 Ag Lab
Sarah do 41
Sarah do 12
Frances do 10
Ann do 7
Mary do 5
Caroline do 3
Richard do 6mo

Edgmond, Shropshire

All born in Shropshire.

This Sarah seems to fit but it would need to be checked to be certain. She is not living with her parents in 1851, so that at least adds to the possibility that it might be her.

Thanks posteria,
I'm not sure how to proceed any further on this family.
However, while searching around for Sarah's birth, I found a set of twins, John and Eleanor Smith, born Mar 10, 1786 in Edgmond, son and daughter of John and Ann Smith.  This John Smith could be Sarah's father, and his twin Eleanor could be the second wife of Robert Simmons - married 1824 in Edgmond (not George Simmons' mother, he was born in 1819).

Hi posteria,
Would you please send the 1851 census for John and Sarah Smith, and if you see Sarah Smith (approx. 22) on another household in Edgmond or Newport, that would be great.  Thanks.  Also, if you see George Simmons (approx. age 22) in Edgmond or Newport area in the 1841....I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks again.

Hello

Here are the Smith family in 1851, as requested ....

Newport HO107/1998 Folio 152 Pages 26 & 27

John Smith Head M 63 Agl Labourer Edgmond Salop
Sarah do Wife M 51 Agl Labourer Gnossall Staffordshire
Caroline do Daughter U 12 Edgmond Salop
Richd do Son U 10 Scholar Edgmond Salop
Ann do Daughter U 2 Edgmond Salop

Edgmond, Shropshire.

The only Sarah Smith aged 22 from Edgmond is the one that I mentioned previously in Reply #2. There are some other Sarah Smiths aged 22, from other birth places in Shropshire, on the 1851 census but this is the only exact match and since she is a visitor/house servant in a household which forms part of your ancestry, she seems to be a good candidate.

Regarding George Simmons aged 22, I still cannot offer anything better than this .... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,339150.msg2246623.html#msg2246623

Hi posteria,

A new twist -

I just received the marriage certificate for George Simmons and Sarah Smith (Feb. 7, 1953 in Edgmond).  He is listed as a widower; she a spinster.  They're both from Edgmond.....

George's father's name is GEORGE Simmons...not Robert.
