Monzie 1798 - Fisher
« on: Friday 20 February 09 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Have traced Peter Fisher back to his marriage to Christian Gowans in 1822 at Muthill.  He came from Monzie. They then lived in Gilmerton, he worked in the quarry.   Moved to Ayrshire and died 1855, parents stated as John Fisher & Margaret Robertson on his DC.   Cannot find any trace of these Fishers.   Where do I look now? Hello Annie,
Do you have the birth/christening of Peter Fisher as your heading is 1798, Monzie?
A John Fisher and Margaret Robertson had a son, James Fisher chr 1827, Tibbermore, Perth and a daughter, Margaret Fisher chr 1824 also Tibbermore but no Peter that I can see.
Another couple with same name had son, chr 1787 Patrick Fisher, Kilfinnan, Argyll. They had several other children in the same area.
Probably this is all nonsense but sometimes the informant doesn't know the names of the deceased persons parents and just names they have heard mentioned!
From the South Perthshire M.I's, Tibbermore: John Fisher in Annat Lane 24.7.1867 76 w Margt Robertson 7.5.1872  76, six chn d inf, s James 14.8.1899 63

Hi Rae.  Have followed Peter through to Ayrshire where he died.  His DC states his parents were John Fisher & Margaret Robertson.  His age each time in census and DC tells us 1798 and Monzie as Place of Birth.   Have looked at these other two John Fisher & Margaret Robertsons but found the Margaret in Tibbermore was born in 1798.  Margaret was "supposedly" still alive when Peter died in 1855 but had to rule out this John & Margaret.
The other "Patrick" in Argyl I think I saw a marriage for him and ruled him out.

A son-in-law was the witness for Peter's DC so it could certainly have been wrong.
Peter called his first daughter Margaret and his first son John, again confirming his parents.
Can't understand why there is no trace of him before his marriage in 1822.
Thought there might have been some Valuation/Rents lists available, but the A.K. Bell Library is a bit too dear.  I understand its going onto Ancestry.com too
Any other suggestions would be greatfully received.  Annie

Hi Annie,
Perhaps he and any siblings were never christened as there don't seem to be any Fisher's christened at Monzie at all. Either that or the records are missing. Although have had a look at the Hugh Wallis IGI batch nos for Perthshire and although the years are there no Fishers were recorded.
Yet another mystery!

Thanks Rae, We have even considered that John Fisher & Margaret Robertson were not married, followed a John Fisher who married a Margaret Murray, couldn't find any children, but a Margaret Murray married much later a widow George Robertson, but could not establish any real link.
There were a lot of Peter Fishers born in Perthshire over the years, so he wasn't named Peter Fisher for no reason.   He belonged to someone but we may never know.
Thanks again, Annie.
