Hi John,
Here are a couple of thoughts I've had on your photo.

The group are all young men (apart from the nurses of course) some of whom are far too young to be working in a hospital even for the 1920's, there are too few nurses for a ward, no white coated doctor types either!
The men are all wearing lapel badges - to identify them as part of a particular group/class.
Schools had nurses.
The E above the door suggests that there is a house A, B, C & D giving weight to an institution rather than wards which tend to be together in one big building.
I'm thinking school/training college matron or similar.

Good luck in your research and don't forget to tell us when you find the answer!

Only 30 or so men and 5 nurses - that ratio is way off for a school - and the age range among the men/boys is way to wide too.  Perhaps we're only seeing the staff of some establishment - but the nurses are the only women, no maids, no cooks?
The thing that strikes me as most odd is how the nurses are so "front and centre", the women aren't tucked at the ends of a row in the back like you may expect - it's almost as if the photograph is all about them.
The other thing I thought was a convalescent home - but no-one looks sick!

The Royal College of Nursing has an archive website -

may be worth looking into?

this photo is dated 1919 from my great aunt "jock" who was a nurse [matron maybe] in london but i dont know which hospital. it looks like aunt jock  on the right hand side of the picture with her head turned to the side. thanks, john.

Just a thought - could she have been a matron in a school rather than a hiospital?

Hi Coffee Lover, thanks for the idea but as previously said by Icsnor, rather a lot of nurses for a school. Also I was told years ago that she was at a hospital, just dont know where. John.

Further information, on the 1939 register she is a mental nurse at Cane Hill Hospital, Coulsdon, Surrey.
From photographs online it does not seem to be the same place though :-\
