SMITH of Castle Hedingham/Sible Hedingham
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 23:31 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for Daniel Smith who was born c1751 and died in 1812. He married Mehetabel Digby in 1776 in Castle Hedingham. Their children were baptised in Sible Hedingham: Sarah 1777; Alice 1779 (married John or James Bacon); Daniel 1781 (married Amelia Harvey); Charles 1782; Mehetabel Digby (married Edmund King Miller); James 1792; Rebecca 1795; and George c1792 (married Lucy Cawkwell).

I think Daniel may have origins in Castle Hedingham where there are a few earlier Daniel Smiths, but I can't tie him in to the families there.

Would love to hear from anyone with links to Smith families in that area or anyone who can help trace them further.

Hi Kelly

Not sure if this is of any use to you but from the Sible Hedingham parish register I have Abraham Smith marrying Harriett Osborne 3/4/1836.
Also William Smith marrying Rachel Osborne 11/6/1838.
And from the IGI Henry Smith marrying Elizabeth Osborne 18/10/1792 Castle Hedingham.
John Smith marrying Lydia Osborne 20/10/1796 Castle Hedingham.

Hi Willis,

Thanks for the info, I'm not sure if they fit in as I haven't traced the Smiths too far into the 1800's but I'll see if I can find out some more.

Cheers,

Kelly.

Hi Kelly

I can tell you about the descendents of Daniel Smith, who is my 4th Gt. Grandfather.  Let me know how I can help, and if you have any more information about his ancestors.

Regards

John R

Hello John,

Thanks for your message. From which branch do you descend? Mehetabel Digby Smith who married Edmund King Miller is my 4x Great Grandmother.

I have found out some more information since my posting. Daniel Smith was baptised in Castle Hedingham 5 Nov 1752 to John Smith and Sarah. I haven't gotten any further with his family but have much more on his wife Mehetabel Digby. She was baptised 14 July 1754 also in Castle Hedingham to James Digby and Margaret Cook. James is the first Digby to appear in the parish records and so must have come from another parish. Margaret Cook's lineage goes back at least 3 more generations in Castle Hedingham.

I would love to share information with you. I will send you a private message with my email for further correspondence.

Regards,

Kelly.

Hullo Kelly,

Is Castle Hedingham an actual castle or is it a place name.

I've got SMITHs in Maldon, but I don't think they'd be related to yours. They came from Norfolk originally.

Hi Jamie,

Castle Hedingham is a place name, neighbouring the town Sible Hedingham. I think maybe there is a castle or manor of some sort, I'm not sure. I don't know where my Smith's came from before Castle Hedingham, no evidence of them being there before 1750ish.

Cheers,

Kelly.

Thanks, Kelly. There is some rumour in my family of someone having lived in a castle for many years, and I wondered about this name.
