Birth/Baptism - JACOBS
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 06:39 GMT (UK) »
Please if there's SKS with access to non-conformist records I'm looking for the birth of Mary Ann JACOBS born abt 1836 to James and Charlotte JACOBS

Her will drawn up in South Africa states that she was born Kimbolton, Huntingdon, England.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Bonti

How sure are you about her parents? I'm not convinced that James and Charlotte are the right ones.

There's only one marriage of a James JACOB(S)and Charlotte (BLINCOWE) in Hunts, and that was in 1796 in Huntingdon St Mary & St Benedict, which is too early. Some at least of their children are on the IGI.

In 1841 HO107/451/3 folio 10B
Kimbolton
James Jacob 35 ag lab
Elizabeth Jacob 35
Frederic Jacob 12
Mary Ann Jacob 6
George Jacob 3 mths
All born in Hunts

The only marriage on Hunts Marriage Index that fits was in 1829 at Huntingdon St Mary & St Benedict between James Jacob and Elizabeth Butler - this marriage is on the IGI

When did she emigrate? There's no Mary Ann born at the right time living with parents James and Elizabeth in 1851 or 1861 - the only one was a servant in Huntingdon and then in Cambridge

Let me know what you think and I'll pull out the full census details

David,

They immigrated after 1841 and before 1852 as Mary Ann married Feb 1852 in D'Urban, Natal.
She immigrated with her parents although the list only gives the fathers name.

The baptism and marriages you have given me are for Church of England .......
In South Africa the family followed the Methodists............I'm not 100% sure if it came from Mary Ann or her husbands side that's why I thought the baptism might have been in the non-conformist records.

Thanks so much for going to all the trouble for me.
Greatly appreciated.

Pre July 1837 the only non conformists who were authorised to perform marriages were Jews and Quakers, so people were usually obliged to marry in the Church of England. Marriages and burials are often the only means of tracking non conformists.

I've checked the BVRI which includes births/baptisms taken from Dr William's Library of non-conformist registers, but none of the three children appear. It depends on which flavour of non conformity they followed and where. I can't find any non conformist churches in Kimbolton, so if they were non conformist they probably travelled, some distance in many cases, to the church of their liking.

George, the youngest, appears to have been buried in Kimbolton aged 7 months on 7 Oct 1841

There's no trace of the Kimbolton family in 1851 so presumably they emigrated at some time between 1841 and 1851

David,

I've just checked the passenger lists again
They left the UK Aug 1849 and arrived Natal Nov 1849

On the passenger list it has
James Jacobs & Wife
Frederick Jacobs and Family.

8 years after the census I think it is highly possible that you've found the family for me.
Out of interest they settled in a Methodist run settlement so I think it's probably as you say they had to be married/baptised in the Church of England as the non-conformist weren't authorised.

Only thing that worries me now is the mother's name of Elizabeth.
Need to do some more digging on my side.

Thak you very much.

Hi, not sure when you posted your query, and I hope you get this reply - I'm pretty sure that the Mary Ann Jacobs you are referring to is my great x2 grandmother!! I do have some information on her as well as copies of marriage cert.  James Jacobs was her biological father, but I have research that shows that Charlotte Jacobs (ex Favel born Putterill) was her step mother.
This is what I know:-
1. Born c1836 Kimbolton Huntingdonshire England
2. Arrived  Port Natal (Durban) South Africa on board "Dreadnought" 2/11/1849 as per transcript "Jacobs, James - spouse Charlotte - children F.K., Mary Ann, Benjamin F."
3.  Married Samuel Jones in Durban 16/2/1852
4. Had 9 children in South Africa
5.  Samuel Jones died Ladysmith 21/5/1872
6. Married Jesse Nuttley (widower) in Ladysmith 20/1/1873 He was the goaler in Ladysmith and she was remembered by inmates for her good food.
7.  Mary Ann dies c1884.

Hope this helps, I think her biological mother could have been Elizabeth, but I was trying to follow a paper trail with no other knowledge.  I do have all her children - names etc.

Catherine,
We are definitely talking about the same family.
What a long break between sips - I couldn't believe that I'd had a reply that matched soooo perfectly
with my findings.

I went and looked at information I have not really done much with, and she had a brother Frederick, who married in Durban (I think).  All my family history is on geni.com.  Is she family of yours??
