WW1 Canadian soldier
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 17:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Sorry if this sounds a silly question, but I am trying to trace a relative who served with the Canadian Overseas expeditionary force during WW1.
He was born in Belfast, County Antrim in 1883, and I have searched for him on the 1911 Irish Census (the only address I have is for his parents which he put on his attestion papers.) He is not listed at his parents address at the time of the census, so I presume because he served with the Canadian force, he would have moved to Canada and then signed up with them. Is this correct?

I have been trying to find him on passenger lists and the Canadian 1901/1911 census to find out when he would have arrived in Canada, but with no luck yet.  :(

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you :)

Hi Tinkerbell,

WW1 attestation papers are on line at collections canada. You can type  Soldiers of the First World War or Canadian Expeditionary Forces into a search engine & you should find it.

Hi Lisa,

This may sound silly, but would he have had to live in Canada before he signed up to serve with the Canadian forces? I know the answer should be yes, but I am having trouble trying to find him leaving Ireland and entering Canada that I am starting to doubt myself  :o!

Thank you for your help

Hi Tinkerbell,

You'd think he'd have to live in Canada but I don't know for sure. Maybe if you post his name, birth year, parents, etc., someone else will join the search.

Hi Tinkerbell,

No need to re-post if you decide to request help, just put his information on this thread. I'm sure there are other people already reading this one.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi

If anyone is interested in giving me a helping hand (any help is much appreciated) I have put a post in the "Request look-up" in the Canada section.

He is William Johnston date of birth 10/01/1883. He does not appear on the 1911 Irish census (I searched using his parents address which he gave on his attestation papers). The 1901 census for Ireland isn't online as far as I can see, and I have searched the passenger lists and 1901/1911 Canadian census with not much luck!
I assume that he may have gone to Canada between 1901-1911, but I can't be sure.

Thanks for any help
