Looking at freebmd, there is a Mary SELFE who died in Sheppey (which is where I gather Sheerness is) in the December Quarter of 1854, and a William SELF who died there in March Quarter of 1862.

Given that these are the ONLY two people of that surname dying in Sheppey, my guess would be that William outlived Mary by eight years.

Would you mind seeing if you can spot him, probably with one of his children and described as a widower, in the 1861 Census?

By the way, where was William (junior) and his family in the 1861 Census? I can't see a street address for them.

It is certainly the correct  family  -  everything except the parents names fit perfectly 

Why Francis and Mary are given as Jerom and Amelia I have no idea at all

This is really well spotted, especially given the odd mistake in the parents' names.

I agree with you; it looks like a mistake has been made in transcribing from the enumerator's schedules to the final forms.

But anyway, this does add two more children to that particular family.

There is a marriage Q2. 1867 Islington Vol 1B. Pg. 408 for Francis Selfe, with a Harriet Applegate on the page.

There is a Harriet Applegate age 15 in 1841 living in Westbury with her parents.

The only likely death for a Mary Selfe that I can see is also in Islington, in 1864; Mary Jane Selfe

This is really interesting. William's sister-in-law Sarah MILBORNE married John Henry BAILEY> Presumably they moved to the Chanel Islands and Ann was born there.

I wonder if she is a sister of Augustus Alfred BAILEY who married into the SELFE family? It all gets a bit confusing after a while!
