Completed -Help with Parish names
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 16:04 GMT (UK) »
I got a document from Scotlandspeople on the marriage of my relatives, but am having trouble trying to read the parish names.

It says Jean Lamont daughter to James Lamont in (I think this is the spelling)   Fisheracnichin in this parish which is Dunoon and Kilmum. Has anyone heard of this name?

Jean's husband is John Ferguson son of Dugald Ferguson in the parish of
Ghindanicl but does say it is the parish of Dunon and Kilmum.

I hope someone can tell me if I"m even close in trying to figure out the names of these places.

Thank You
McLeod/Syme

Hi. I have had a look at Thomson's 1832 map of Argyll but could see nothing like the two names you mention.  If you were to post the part of the document which gives these names I might be able to decipher them.
Don't send the whole document as it would break the copyright rule.

Hello. Came upon your posting.   Would like to see the words on the documents so that I could judge  for myself.

BUT based solely on local knowledge and the STRUCTURE  ( ie length and some letters in the right places)of the names I would GUESS at  Glendaruel and Inverchaolain as being the best bets.

As stated by you, I have never heard of either of these.

Really would like a look.

Hi

The document was quite dark on the entry I wanted so I wrote to Scotlandspeople and they gave me what they thought it said, the one was Glendaruel and the other parish they weren't sure but thought is was tighnarich.

Thank you for your offer of help

Hello again. On the basis of what you are now saying would go for TIGHNABRUAICH which is not all that far from your Glendaruel.
