« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 17:26 GMT (UK) »
hi can anyone tell me how to narrow down the search for a birth in Dawley Shropshire?
my gt Grandfather was an Edward Williams born between 1848 and 1850 in Dawley.
the only other info I have for him is that his father is Richard a Blacksmith.
I have sent of for 2 birth certs for Madely and 1 Wellington Sal so far and none are his,so any help would be welcome, thank you

Hi Babsylena,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you found Edward on earlier censuses? Is he the one shown as born Dawley (Wales) on the 1871 census, married to a Maria? I notice 1881 shows him as born Birmingham.

There doesn't seem to be an Edward Williams born Dawley on earlier censuses, and defo not with a father Richard that I can see ...

Were the marriage witnesses named Williams by any chance?   :-\

Possibly a red herring but I've just come across an Edward Williams with a father Richard, Blacksmith:

1861
RG9/4327 38 28
Ynyscynhaiarn, Caernarvonshire
Corn Hill

Richard Williams, head, 52, Master Black Smith, Caernarvonshire Franadoe?
Mary, wife, 45, b. Ynyscynhaiarn
John, son, 17, Blacksmith, b. Pormadoe?
Edward, son, 12, scholar, b. do.
William, son, 7, scholar, b. do.
Richard, son, 5, scholar, b. do.
John Jones, boarder, 15, Seaman, b. do.

Sorry for my interpretation of the place names - even with the help of Genuki, I'm clueless!

hi Tati,
yes you have the right Edward in 1871 and it does say Dawley Wales.
Maria was his 1st wife,he then married again and I have found him in the 1911 census and it is Dawley Shropshire,
I haven't found him or his father in earlier census.
I live in Canterbury and don't know the areas around Shropshire but I shall check the census you have found
thank you so much for your help, it's the 1st time I have used this site and i'm a bit of a novice

Hi there. Recently I went for a walk to St Cynhaearn's Church and read an interesting story on a gravestone. In the grave lay Mary Williams (died 1875), who was the wife of Richard Williams the blacksmith. Also buried there is their son, Edward who died 14th February 1879. According to the family tree you have on Ancestry, Edward is the father of Edith S A Williams who was born in 1894. I am trying to find if there are any living descendants to Richard Williams and wonder if you can throw any light on this? Thanks very much, Dafydd Williams.
