Check your local library what electoral rolls or street directories they have and you can do some lookups.
If you are an NZSG member the research team will do this for You? or if not andyou are in Auckland and go go to the NZSG library at Panmure.

The Manawatu newspaper is online but not searchable, otherwise you could look up marriage and birth details
