Thanks guys, the 1923 one above is my great grandma (I can just about remember her). My mum thinks they divorced as she died in Suffolk whereby Henry died in Surrey.

Many thanks for those links, very useful. Unfortunately I can't get hold of his army records as I am not the next of kin and the person that is doesn't care much about her father as he walked out on her and her brothers sometime, hence the second marriage. I have also learned that he had at least one affair of which a child was born who now as adult contacted me last year as he was trying to find out more about his father but he knew as much as I did about him.

Thanks for the offer regarding the overseas marriage indexes, I have checked them out but a second pair of eyes will not go amiss.

I'll check on the Times website regarding the divorce.

It may be that Henry & Ethel did not marry; if he had not divorced his first wife, she may have taken his name.
