Return voyages from Australia
« on: Monday 14 February 05 21:44 GMT (UK) »
I need some expert help here.

Does anyone know where I might find passenger lists for voyages from Australia (Swan River) to England?  In 1851/2, some relatives returned to England for a visit, although I believe that some of the family went back afterwards.  They may have travelled on the 'Dido.'

Hi Nell

"If Only" - I am also looking for a family who travelled back to UK, but from Qld. For your Swan River group I can only suggest the WA Gen. Soc.

I didn't see much there but there is a Swan River Interest group and also some links.

If your ship went through Sydney, there may be some info here

but no index - rather time consuming to track through.

Hi Nell

Was just on this board for the first time in ages and saw your post.

Did you do any good with those two ideas from Trish?

I ask because I have been embroiled in this area.  Searched long and hard for the passage of my g-grandparents to Australia.  They were not anywhere on the Net because they were not assisted immigrants.  The only records were held by State Archives, and some of these have been microfilmed and are held by State Libraries in other States.

I only found them when I discovered that our Queensland State Library would do limited research for people who don't live in Brisbane.  A very helpful librarian found them for me on a microfilm from the New South Wales State Archives.

If you don't have them yet, I may be going to our State Library in the not too distant future and would have a look to see if there are any shipping microfilms from WA.  Or, as Trish said, if the ship went via Sydney, they may be on NSW records.

Let me know if I can help,

Marie

Hi Marie,

No luck so far.  I know when they arrived, courtesy of others but confirmed by the WAGS site, but so far no luck coming back.  I'll keep looking.

OK, Nell,

If you'd like me to look for them at the Queensland State Library, let me know.  You could always pm me with their details.  I'd be really happy to help, if you would like this.  I know shipping between England and Australia can be extremely elusive!
