Peter Gillespie - Logie c.1770
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with my brick wall  ::).  My ancestor Peter Gillespie married Helen Nuccol/Nicol on 21st Dec 1770 in Logie, Perthshire.  According to the o.p.r. Helen came from Alloa.  Is there any way of finding out more about Peter i.e. his parents names, his death etc?  He worked as a labourer for a Mr. Erskine in Alloa in 1775, when his son David was born.  I don't know if it was on the Erskine estate in Alloa though.

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl  :)

From the IGI at www.familysearch.org they had the following children (all extracted entries except where stated) in Alloa, Clackmannanshire:

27 Sept 1773 - William (bpt 30th)
24th Nov 1775 -David (bpt - 27th)
24 July 1777 - Janet (bpt. 25th)
15 April 1782 - William (bpt. 19th)
2 Feb 1784 - Helen (bpt. 6th - IGI submitted)
1st May 1787  - Peter (bpt - 5th)
24 Jan 1790 - Mary (bpt)
17 Jan 1793 - Elizabeth (bpt 20th - IGI submitted)

If they used the traditional naming pattern, then Peter/Patrick (synonymous in Scotland) might have a father called William and a mother called Helen.

There is an IGI extracted record for a Patrick Gillespie b. 30 May 1757,. Kilmadock, Perthshire.  Parents William Gillespie and Elisabeth Clarke. This is not too far from Logie.

What were Helen's parents called?

Have you looked at the image of the marriage?

It might be worth following this family up using the LDS (familysearch) site that I've previously mentioned and Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  The latter is pay to view but very reasonable.

Hope this is of some help.

Regards

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for that info.  I think the Patrick b. 1757 would have been to young (13) to marry ?  I don't know what Helen's parents names were either I'm afraid.  I do have a copy of the marriage cert in 1770 though.  I'm sure I've seen an I.G.I. birth for 1745 for a Peter in Fossoway & Tullibolie, with the father's name as Patrick.  I'll have another look.

Thanks,

Daryl

Oops - my arithmetic went wrong there  :-[

I'll have another look

Only one coming up in Perthshire on SP is:

5 June 1746 Kilmadock - Parents - John Gillespie and Agnes McCulloch

This doesn't seem to fit the names  :-\
