« on: Sunday 01 March 09 09:26 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Thomas Arnold b.1850 in Orston Notts.
I have him and I think his mother in 1851 in Orston.

Thomas    Shipsides                   57    Ag lab.                        Orston
Elizabeth  Shipsides                   55                                       Nottingham
James       Shipsides son-in law  22   Ag lab                          Orston
Elizabeth Arnold dau.-in law       19 Railway labs. wife          Orston
Thomas Arnold g-son in law        3 months                            Orston

I know daughter-in-law could also mean step-daughter but Istill can't make the connections here - can anyone help?

Although I have Thomas on 1881 and later census' I can't find him in 1871 or 1861.

Bennett, Tennant, Richards, Price.....Staffordshire
Reid, Brown, Harrison, Saunders, Coetzer........South Africa and Scotland.

The simplest scenario is this was a second marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth, and that Elizabeth (Arnold) was the child of Elizabeth senior's first marriage.

Two possible marriages from freeBMD:

Thomas Shipsides married Elizabeth Whitehead. 3rd quarter 1846, Bingham 15, 677

Elizabeth Whitehead married William Arnold 2nd quarter 1850, Bingham 15, 785.

Hi, bear with me here goes.
Thomas Shipsides married Elizabeth Whitehead 1846 Jul Bingham 15/677.
How did I get Whitehead? On the 1871 census Thomas Shipsides is with wife Elizabeth and son in law James Whitehead- James is "ditto"Shipsides on the earlier census.

1841 census sees Elizabeth Whitehead in Orston no husband listed but with children
John 20
William 15
 JAMES14
Sarah 11
ELIZABETH 9
George 5
I looked on IGI but the only Marriage I could find for Elizabeth to a Whitehead was Thomas W and Elizabeth Chackling 10-7-1822 in St Marys Nottingham.

Thanks  larkspur , Mary A and Jen B. That was great - I still had to draw it out.  It becomes easier once you realise you have 2 different Elizabeth Whiteheads and that Elizabeth senior had been married twice.
