Swalwell Blackbirds
« on: Monday 02 March 09 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello all. I am looking into my Mothers family-the Blackbirds. It`s been rather easy so far as they all lived in Swalwell. I have got as far as:-
William Norvell Blackbird (born 1907) married Marjorie Aspinall
Edward Errington Blackbird (1882-1921) married Margaret Ada Turnbull
William Blackbird (1841-1913) was married twice, first to Ann, then to Mary Ann Shield
Matthew Blackbird (1801-?) who was married to Isabella (William, Matthew and family are buried in St Marys` Churchyard in Whickham)

Can anyone find anything else? Or are there any of my Blackbird relatives out there?

Thanks.
Blackbird - Swalwell, Durham
Aspinall - Newton by Hyde, Ashton Under Lyne, Glossop, Westhoughton
Simpson - Hyde, Cheshire
Milne - Stonehaven, Scotland
Robertson - Dundee
Porter - Alnwick, Northumberland

Hi DougalG
Welcome to RootsChat. Just checked the IGI and found 2 Matthew Blackbirds baptised in 1797 one in Whickham and the other in Newcastle. Something amiss with the IGI entry for Whickham Matthew, as it says Father is Matthew and mother Mary, but BTs ( bishops transcripts) show father as William and mother as Mary.

Hi Gary and thanks for that. One of the problems I have had is that the Blackbird family liked calling their children the same names! The first son after the fathers father and the second son after themselves! I first guessed that William`s father was called Matthew as his second son was called Matthew! It`s the Whickham Matthew I am looking for. I have heard that William (1841-1913) was on the council somewhere and the Co-op seems to run all the way through as most of the above William`s children worked there and then my Grandad worked there too. I wonder if the co-op have an online archive of some kind? I don`t live in the UK anymore, but my parents still live in the area so I might have to get them to do some library visits for me!
Thanks again.

Hi DougalG
Just on the off chance you would like to view the BT for the Matthew baptized 13 Aug 1797 in Whickham use this link http://www.rootschat.com/links/05qf/  and enter 123 in the goto image box at the bottom of the screen.

Hi. I thought Matthew was born in 1801. Have I made a mistake here? It`s gonna be a long night!!!!! ::)

When I tried the above link I just got a white blank page. I am a bit of a computer buffoon so I might be missing something.

Thanks guys. :)

Can anyone find anything else?

I guess there is lots more to find if you wanted to do a tree that starts with one and gets bigger as it goes down - i.e following all Blackbirds in each generation. So floowing ALL blackbird descendants from Matthew downwards. Then if you get a generation back, follwing all from there downwards.

I personally prefer this to a single strand line going backwards, as you get to know the wider family. But it is personal choice
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi DougalG
The link is working OK here in the UK, well it is in Gateshead. There are only 2 Matthew Blackbirds baptized between 1790 and 1810 in england on the IGI. So I would say that one is your Matthew. But don't take that as gospel. Its worth a look.

:) Ah, Gateshead, I remember it well...sigh. You don`t appreciate a place enough till you`re not there any more.
