CAPSTICK family and Low Park Farm Dillicar *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 03 March 09 09:04 GMT (UK) »
My great great great grandfather James Capstick was a farmer at the Smithy, Howgill. At the 1841 census they had 8 children Roger aged 20 was listed as the Blacksmith. In 1846 he married Hannah Dacre and setup home at High Park,54 acres, Dillicar, Westmorland, They were my great great grand parents. By 1861 they had 7 children, the eldest Edward was to be come my gggf.
By the 1871 census they had moved to Low Park Dillicar 150 acres.after  Roger died and Hannah was the head.
In 1877 Edward married Mary Atkinson. He was a butcher in Kendal and eventually  went to Liverpool as a butcher and cowkeeper.
When Hannah died their son Roger, I call him  young Roger, took over the farm before also going to Liverpool.
I think the family is quite well documented.
So what is this ramble about?
1.   I can find no trace of High Park, Was it destroyed by the building of what we know now as the west coast main line?
2.   I would like to know something about Low Park. It is now derelict between the M6 motorway and the river Lune. It is shown on the Howgill Fells o.s map and can be seen from Howgill Lane. Who owned it etc and why is it derelict.?
3.   Why did so many people from that area go to be cow keepers in Liverpool
4.   I would also like to know more about cow keepers.
5.   There several Capstick families in that area but we don’t seem to have any connection to them.
As I live in Mid Wales I do not get up to Kendal as often as I would like and then its usually weekends so cannot get to the records office where I expect some of the answers will be.
Can anyone help me please?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I can only comment about your first question:

The construction of the West Coast main line, originally the Lancaster-Carlisle Railway, was started in 1844 and completed in 1846, so I don't think this is why High Park is no longer there. I have also searched a current OS map and have located Low Park, but no High Park.

As you already suspect, the answer will probably lie in the maps at Kendal Record Office. Have you thought about asking for a price quote from them to look at the various maps on your behalf?

Regards

Hello

Thanks for the response Chris, I was beginning to think I wasn't  going to get any. I think I am going to have to spend some time in the Kendal record Office as I have many avenues to explore there. Hope it will be bad weather though because when I'm up in the area there is walking to be done.

Michael,

A further thought - you may be able to check the censuses by address rather than surname. Have you checked 1841 to find the farms around the same area? If you found the farm in 1901 for instance, then you would know it disappeared afterwards. Is it possible that the farm may have survived until the M6 motorway was constructed in the mid 1960s?

I think that Roger aged 20 & a blacksmith (living with James Capstick & family) is  the nephew of James. His mother is Emma Capstick, & Roger was baptised in 1817 in Preston Patrick.(see Familysearch) His mother was unmarried. Most of his Capstick relations are here, except James, whose baptism I have never found, & William, baptised in Kirkby Lonsdale. The Ann Capstick baptised in 1803 is my GGG grandmother. Hope this is of interest to you. Regards, Cee.

Thanks Cee
That is of great interest and puts a small spanner in the works.
So was Emma James's brother?
Roger  and his wife Hannah were my ancestors and we descended through his son Edward.
Do you think that because Emma was unmarried Roger was brought up by James and Margaret?
Did Emma ever marry?
Do you know a ot about the family?

Not your family - but I know that High Park existed in 1955. A John Stalker lived at 1 High Park. I was looking for it in August and it seems to have gone!! There is a High Park caravan Park - maybe that is the land?

Thanks karenest
High Park does seem to have disappeared.
I understand Low park was inhabited until the 1960's, probably when the motorway was built.
I would love to have a photo of it when it was a working farm.
We will be in the area at the end of this month so will go and have another mooch around.
