Old occupation
« on: Tuesday 15 February 05 15:07 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what a hatler is?  I found my gt-grandfather on the 1901 census and this is what his occupation is listed as.  I can’t find this in old occupation listings.
Thanks!

Could it be a transcription error for hatter or even butler? As a general rule, if you can't find it in Google, it's an error.

Thanks for the reply.  I thought of a hatter, or a misprint, and i did an internet search and found some reference to hatler horses.  Havent a clue what these are, but I know my gt-grandfather and his family were all farm labourers and carters, so whether this is connected, I don't know.
Thanks again!

I live in a rural parish and in transcribing the various registers never once came across an occupation remotely resembling hatler. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but you should be able to find your g grandfather on the family search website for the 1881 census which might provide a cross check.

Did you read the actual page or just the transcript? From what you say he may well have been an Ostler. 8)

Hello, I just read the description off the internet Census site.  My dad did some internet searching last night and he found references to bridles and hatlers, so I think maybe the occupation stated might be slightly incorrect.  I'll take it as its something to do with farming and horses.
Many thanks to all who have replied.
All the best
Amanda

hi amanda,

by the sounds of it maybe "bridles and halters", still to do with horses and farming.
