DAWES + MURTON in Bere Ferris 1841 & 1851

Hello, I'm looking for direction in tracing my GGGGrandmother, Mary Ann (DAWES / DAWE). 

A cousin found her baptismal record in Bere Ferris Church in 1817 as the daughter of Peter DAWES, a miner, & Betsey ___.  However, for unknown reasons, the "abode" of the family was listed as Redruth, Cornwall.  So I'm not sure where the family actually originated.  Am hoping to find Peter & Betsey DAWES in in Bere Ferris for 1841 and/or 1851, perhaps with other family -- don't know whether the couple had additional children.

Would also appreciate a check for daughter Mary Ann (DAWES) & husband Elisha MURTON in Bere Ferris for the same census years.  They married in Bere Ferris in 1839 and were in Gunnislake, Cornwall, by 1858.  Kids were born starting 1840.

Peter & Besty moved to Cornwall before 1861 - not sure if you have this:

Next but one below them, same address,  is this household of a Peter DAWS 41, tin miner b St Mewans Cornwall and his Beerferris born wife Mary 44, plus their 2 miner sons: Richard 17and Peter 14 also b Beerferris. Also in the house is a 14 yr od Niece, Jane CHANNON b Beerferris.

The enumerated address for the housefold (not them)  at the top of the page    is: Gunnislake.
Then it changes to Address: Nagwell? (Vagwell) for the rest of the page. The first new house on the next page is at Hatches Green.

I am thrilled with the new information, and suspect my apartment will yet again escape a good cleaning this weekend as I study these leads and guess how to follow them further.  (Hmph, must you be so incredibly quick about it?  Monday would’ve been ever so much better ...)

Firstly Pepper Street is now Cornwall Street & the houses are tiny! I have a friend with two children living there pushed for space. Also the street is in Bere Alston where the money side of things took place. There are several houses that were 'count' houses. All the mining took place outside of the village. One of the largest mines was 'The Great Consol Mine' but there was so many & the nearby port at Morwellham on the River Tamar was one of the biggest in the world.

I have three baptism records.
Mary Ann Dawes 6/4/1817
William Dawes 24/12/1815
William Vigus Daws 24/9/1824
Francis Dawes 31/3/1822


Marriage Peter Dawe & Elizabeth Vigus 24/12/1814. I will have to check the microfiche again for fathers names.

Death William Dawes 1/2/1816 aged 10weeks. It could be the above William as the timing is bang on. Also in 1859-1860 there was a large cholera outbreak in the villages. In 1847 there was an Anna Dawes who died aged 4. I could look & check her baptism record to find if she was one of the family? It also look like Francis died aged 27 in 1849 (spelt Dawe in this case).

When the wether is better I'll check out Bere Alston graveyard & see if I can find any headstones.

Suzanne, I appreciate your perspective on “how things are” around Bere Alston as much as your factual records!  However, I’m unfamiliar with the term “count houses” -- what exactly were they in Devon during the mid-1800s?

Thank you for thinking of looking up those baptisms.  Were those the only ones in that time period?  Or were you searching only for Peter & Betsey DAWE’s eldest children?  At what church were these baptisms recorded?

I already have Mary Ann’s parents confirmed, but if you have any spare time to look up the other three kids, that would be great -- especially William Vigus DAWES ... whose parentage would point toward the marriage record you discovered!  I would very much love to learn the fathers’ names of that bride and groom, and where they wed – and whether the groom was recorded as being born in Redruth, Cornwall!  (I’m trying not to get excited about your finding her maiden name -- yet!)

I’m wondering about the Peter DAWS (age 41) found two doors down from Peter & Betsy in 1861.  His age would seem to fit as one of Peter & Betsy’s children, born between Mary Ann and Francis.  Yet he was not found living with Peter & Betsy in 1841.  Could someone please attempt a lookup for this Peter “Jr.” age 21 in the 1841 census?  Perhaps married to Mary ___ by that time; one child was born by 1844. 

The IGI does have the baptism of a Peter DAWS:

(which I now see is near St. Austell; not around Calstock or Redruth where my clan was known to have resided ... hmmm ...)

Hopefully I can check the Dawe marriage for you on Friday (17 month old baby permitting! He shouts a lot.) Forgot to say the married in Bere Ferres at the church as she was from there. Same for the baptisms. Holy Trinity in Bere Alston wasn't built until 1848.

I'll try & look for the others at a later date.

A 'count house' was a mine account office were the business side of things took place. I go to the local history meetings when I can & have a brilliant book of the village where there is lots of info & photos that they produced.
